Alice Marie Kauffman

Alice Marie Kauffman, the daughter of Peter and Anna Jensine (Sorensen) Byriel, was born December 7, 1928, at her parents’ home in Atlantic, Iowa and died December 13, 2018, at her home under hospice care in Audubon, Iowa at the age of 90 years and 7 days.
Alice was baptized at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Atlantic, Iowa and confirmed at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Audubon, Iowa. She attended Audubon Community Schools graduating with the High School Class of 1947. Alice then was employed at Carlson Hybrid Corn Company as a secretary.
On November 1, 1947, she was united in marriage to Russell L. Kauffman at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They were blessed with four children, Marcia, Gregory, Susan, and Abby. Alice continued to work for the Carlson Hybrid Corn Company until 1951. Alice and Russell farmed from 1951 until August of 1965, where they had grown row crops and raised livestock before making their home in Audubon. Alice was employed as the manager at ABC Credit Corporation for 31 years. Along with managing the Credit Corporation Alice also had her own business filing the weekly credit report for the area which was obtained through subscription. After retiring from the Credit Corporation she continued to provide the credit report until 2017.
Alice was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church where she enjoyed bible study, crocheting and knitting for the Prayer Shawl Ministry, quilting and helping with the mailings at the church. She was also a member of the Lady’s Red Hat Society.
Preceding her in death was her husband Russell Kauffman; her infant grandson David Plagman; her son-in-law Robert Plagman; her parents; her brothers: Arthur Byriel, Kenneth Byriel, Donald Byriel, Marvin and wife Ruby Byriel, Harvey Byriel; her sisters-in-law Donna Byriel, Ollivene and husband Allison Deist, and Dorothy and husband Einer Madsen.
Survivors include her children: Marcia and husband Terry Smith of Lake City, Iowa, Gregory and wife Ana Kauffman of Elizabeth, Colorado, Susan and Steve Stetzel of Audubon, Iowa, and Abby and husband Mike Dominick of Joplin, Missouri; her grandchildren: Stephanie and husband Troy Stoelk and Matthew Plagman all of Carroll, Iowa, Adam and wife Andrea Plagman of Lake City, Iowa, Kristopher and wife Kate Kauffman of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Greg L. Kauffman of Colorado, Cassey Dominick and husband Matthew Petty of Fayetteville, Arkansas, Charles Dominick of St. Cloud, Minnesota, and Tessa and husband Alex Hiler of Tulsa, Oklahoma; her great grandchildren Chandler, Connor, and Clare Stoelk all of Carroll, Iowa, Gavin and Erica Plagman of Lake City, Iowa, Tyler, Olivia, and Haley Kauffman of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Zooey and Charlotte Petty of Fayetteville, Arkansas, and Rosalie Dominick of St. Cloud, Minnesota; brothers Glenn Byriel of Boone, Iowa, Russell and wife Wynn Byriel of Madrid, Iowa, and sister-in-law Dolores Byriel of Ames, Iowa; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
The family will meet with friends Wednesday morning, December 19, 2018, from 9:30 A.M. until the time of the service at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Audubon, Iowa. Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Ben Unseth on Wednesday, December 19, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Audubon. Interment will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Audubon. The casket bearers will be Charles Dominick, Matthew Plagman, Adam Plagman, Kristopher Kauffman, Russell Eugene Byriel, Jon Byriel, Brian Byriel, and Connor Stoelk.
