Walter Mark Severin

Walter Mark Severin, the son of Elmer and Blanche (Marion) Severin, was born February 1, 1930, at his parents’ home near Clarence, Iowa and died September 26, 2015, at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, Iowa at the age of 85 years, 7 Months, and 25 days.
Walter was baptized at the Methodist Church in Clarence, Iowa and confirmed at the Bowman Chapel Methodist Church in rural Guthrie County. He attended rural school Bear Grove #9, and then graduated from the Guthrie Center High School with the Class of 1948. Walter studied at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa for a year and a half then moved to Waterloo, Iowa and was employed at a meat packing plant.
On June 20, 1951, he was united in marriage to Esther Ann McDonald at the Christian Church in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Two daughters Lorilyn and Sherilyn were born to this union. Walter and Esther moved to Exira, Iowa in 1951 and Walter was employed at the local feed store. In 1953 they moved to the family farm located in Bear Grove Township near Guthrie Center, Iowa. Walter operated the farm growing row crops and raising livestock for many years until he retired in December of 1987. They had built a home in Spirit Lake, Iowa and spent many enjoyable days near the lake. Walter and Esther enjoyed traveling making several trips overseas and traveling throughout the United States. They lived on the farm until 1998 then purchased a condo in Atlantic, Iowa. During the winters they would travel to their home in Texas. In 2010 they moved to the Heritage House and later moved to the Health Care Center in 2013.
Walter was an active member of the Bowman Chapel United Methodist Church near Guthrie Center. Walter served on the building committee and was instrumental in seeing that the existing building was constructed. He served in the Army National Guard for over eight years. He was a member of Veritas Lodge No. 392 in Audubon, Iowa and member of the Za-Ga-Zig Shrine and the Nishna Valley Shrine Club. Walter was an avid fisherman and traveled many times to fish in the boundary waters in Canada. He enjoyed golfing and watching college football. But most of all he loved to spend time with his family especially the grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents Elmer and Blanche Severin; his father-in-law and mother-in-law Lester and his wives Esther and Irma McDonald; his brother Donald Severin; his sister Marion and husband Ingvald Williamson; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Martha and husband Dr. John Bartholow, James McDonald, Gladden McDonald, Merton McDonald and Joy Nelson.
Survivors include his wife Esther Severin of Atlantic, Iowa; his daughters Lorilyn and husband Tom Schultes of Anita, Iowa and Sherilyn and husband Chris Karamitros of Shenyang, China; his grandchildren Shannessy and husband Shane Michael of West Des Moines, Iowa, Mandi and husband Dr. James Brauer of Atlantic, Iowa, Shelby and husband William Herrick of Menlo, Iowa, Ivory Karamitros of Kansas City, Missouri, Vanessa Karamitros of Mission, Kansas, Ruby and husband Peter Martinez of Rolla, Missouri, Pearl Karamitros of Springfield, Missouri, and Luke Karamitros of Bolivar, Missouri, his great grandchildren Bellameira Michael, Lylionna Michael, James Brauer, Jonathan Brauer, Thomas Herrick, Anna Herrick, John Herrick, and Xavier Silvey; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Ellen Severin of Carroll, Iowa, Earl and wife Doris McDonald of Burlington, Iowa, Marlies McDonald of Tujunga, California, Evelyn McDonald of Torrance, California, and Ted Nelson of Burlington, Iowa; nieces, nephews; other relatives and friends.
The Celebration of Life Memorial service will be conducted by Pastor Jay Amundson on Saturday, October 3, 2015, at 10:30 A.M. at the Bowman Chapel United Methodist Church in Rural Guthrie County, Iowa. Inurnment will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery at a later date. The family prefers memorials to the Bowman Chapel United Methodist Church.
