Alan Eugene Henriksen, the son of Virgil and Betty Hindman Henriksen, was born August 8, 1959, at the Audubon County Memorial Hospital in Audubon, Iowa and died January 8, 2011, at the Friendship Home in Audubon at the age of 51 years and 5 months.
Alan was baptized and confirmed at Our Saviours Lutheran Church in Audubon. He attended Gray Elementary School in Gray, Iowa and then graduated from the Audubon High School with the Class of 1978. Alan attended Iowa Western Community College in Council Bluffs, Iowa graduating in 1980 with a degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management. He moved to Onawa, Iowa and helped a friend start a restaurant. Alan returned to Council Bluffs and was a Chef at the Holiday Inn for several years. He moved to Audubon and cooked at the Hamburger Shop for a short time then went to Kimballton, Iowa and helped start a restaurant. He moved to Harlan, Iowa where he was a Chef at the 59er Supper Club for several years then later worked at the Subs and Suds for a few years. He retired from cooking and worked as a Bee Keeper with Lowell Hupp in and around the Harlan area. For the past fifteen years he has lived on the family farm helping with the farming and maintaining the lawn.
Alan was a member of Our Saviours Lutheran Church in Audubon. He loved to go camping and enjoyed being outdoors. He liked to ride the Amtrak train to Colorado where he would spend a few days and then return. He was very interested in Indian Lore. He enjoyed gardening and always had a large vegetable garden and had a collection of cactus which he had grown. Alan was a true chef, preferring to cook from scratch rather than opening a can to make his delicious meals.
Alan was preceded in death by his grandparents Gilbert and Laura Henriksen and Glenn and Esther Hindman; his great uncles Clarence Heiken and Harold Henriksen; other great aunts and great uncles.
Survivors include his parents Virgil and wife Betty Henriksen of Audubon, Iowa; his brother John and wife JoEllen Henriksen and their son Benjamin all of Audubon; his aunts and uncles Lois and husband Clifford Olsen of Spaulding, Iowa, Lyle and wife Evelyn Henriksen of Corning, Iowa, Gaylord (Fred) and wife Mary Henriksen of Afton, Iowa, Donna and husband Willis Stone of Kent, Washington, LaVerne and wife Margaret Hindman of Springfield, Missouri; his great aunts Catherine Heiken of Audubon and Vernal Henriksen of Harlan, Iowa; many cousins, other relatives and friends.
Cemetery:
Inurnment will be in the Arlington Heights Cemetery in Audubon.
Visitation:
The family will meet with friends Thursday morning from 10:00 A.M. until the time of the service at Our Saviours Lutheran Church in Audubon.
Service:
The Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be conducted by Pastor Doug Opp on Thursday, January 13, 2011, at 11:00 A.M. at Our Saviours Lutheran Church in Audubon, Iowa.
