Alfred Minter Potter, the son of Alfred Henry and Nellie Eliza Stogdill Potter, was born August 16, 1933, in Council Bluffs, Iowa and passed on August 14, 2008, at his home in Audubon, Iowa at the age of 74 years, 11 months, and 28 days.
After Alfreds mother passed away, Alfred, his brother and sister moved to the USA Christian Home in Council Bluffs, Iowa, then later to the Grandview Farm, before moving to the Annie Wittenmyer Home in Davenport, Iowa. He attended school in Davenport, then attended the Lewis High School in Lewis, Iowa. Alfred enlisted in the U.S. Navy on June 25, 1952. During his tour of duty he served on four different ships: U. S.S. Pictor, U.S.S. Repose, U.S.S. Mt. Baker, and the U.S.S. Chara, all during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged on June 20, 1956 and returned to Council Bluffs, where he was employed at several different jobs.
On June 29, 1957, he was united in marriage to Marlene Marie Nolte at the Presbyterian ministers home in Atlantic, Iowa. They lived in the Omaha-Council Bluffs area for a short time, then moved to Chicago, IL where Alfred attended drafting school.
Alfred worked for W. L. Stengaard where he worked with expanded metal. In March of 1960 he started working for A.B.Dick Company which later became Video Jet System. Alfred was the material handler. In 1995 he retired after working for the company for over 35 years. While working they lived in Des Plaines, IL and McHenry, IL. In 1979 they moved to Woodstock, IL then moved to Harvard, IL. They returned to Iowa in 2004 and lived in Atlantic, IA before moving to their present home in Audubon in November of 2006.
Alfred enjoyed woodworking, making many types of projects including rocking horses, truck banks, and many other items. He was an avid reader and enjoyed reading mysteries. He also enjoyed watching TV, especially DIY, police shows and anything about railroads. Alfred liked the Chicago Cubs and the Chicago Bears.
Preceding him in death were his parents and his maternal grandparents and paternal grandparents.
Survivors include his wife Marlene Potter; his son Eugene Potter, both of Audubon, IA; his brother Melvin Potter of Port Orchard, WA; his sister Kathy and husband Gil Chisholm of Jacksonville, FL; his brother-in-law Don Nolte of Atlantic, IA; his sister-in-law Doris and husband Bob Evans of Elliott, IA; many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Service:
Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held Saturday, August 23, 2008 at the Cass County Community Center in Atlantic, Iowa from 5:00P.M. to 8:00 P.M. A short memorial service conducted by Pastor Leon Hodges at 5:30 P.M. will be followed by a time for food and fellowship with the family.
