Alice Johnson

January 16, 1924 — May 17, 2008

Alice Marie Johnson was born January 16, 1924, at Adair, Iowa, to Jacob and Wilhelmina (Wedemeyer) Ernst. She grew up in Adair County where she attended rural schools and graduated from Adair High School in 1943.

On August 5, 1944, she married Floyd Johnson in Adair, Iowa. The couple moved to Broadview, Illinois, where they lived and worked. Alice retired from Allied Van Lines in 1988. Following Floyd's death in 1996, Alice moved to Des Moines, Iowa. In 2007 Alice moved to Madrid Home in Madrid, Iowa, where after a short illness, she died on May 17, 2008.

Alice and Floyd were members of Hope Lutheran Church in Hillside, Illinois. After moving to Des Moines, Alice became a member of Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Des Moines and also attended Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church in Polk City with her niece and nephew, Barbara and Tom Hackett.

Left to cherish her memory include her brother, Dale Ernst; her nephews, Jim Ernst of Omaha, Mike Ernst of Adair, Neil Ernst of Greenfield; her niece, Joni Ernst of Des Moines; several grand nieces and nephews, cousins, friends, and her close friend and neighbor in Chicago, Dorothy Vojtek.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Floyd, and her brothers, Leonard and Oscar.

Although Alice never had children of her own, she cherished her nephews, niece, grand nephews and nieces as though they were her own. Other joys in her life included the Church, flower gardens, and her companion and the light of her life for the last four years, her cat, "Kitty"

Funeral Services are 10:00 a.m. Monday, May 19, 2008, at the Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Des Moines, Iowa, with burial in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Adair, Iowa. Visitation is one hour prior to the funeral service also at the Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church. Hockenberry Family Care in Adair, Iowa, is in charge of the arrangements.
