Andrew O. "Sunny" Weiss, 91, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, June 13, 2007, at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic.
Andrew Oren "Sunny" Weiss was born on November 8, 1915, near Manilla, Iowa, the son of Andrew C. and Linnie (Felt) Weiss. He also had four sisters.
Sunny graduated from Shelby High School in 1934. He then went on and completed two years at the University of Iowa. After attending college, Sunny left and went to Los Angeles, California, to work at the Douglas Aircraft Factory until WWII ended.
On August 28, 1940, he was married to Lavina Hansen on their way back to Iowa from Las Vegas, Nevada. To this union were two daughters were born, Janet Lee and Shari Lynn.
In 1919, his father quit farming to buy a hardware store in Shelby, Iowa; but later on purchased a farm near Avoca and wanted him to return home from California to help him farm. Sunny farmed for 30 years, before retiring in 1979.
Sunny was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Nishna Hills Golf Course and the Elks Lodge all of Atlantic.
Sunny is survived by his wife, Lavina Weiss of Atlantic; daughters, Janet Lee Smyser and her husband, Jack of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Shari Lynn Andersen and her husband, Rich of Broken Arrow, OK; grandchildren, Scott Andersen and his wife, Rebel of Skiatook, OK, Shelly McCord and her husband, Tony of Broken Arrow, OK, Jeff Smyser and his wife, Leigh Ann of Council Bluffs, IA, and Jamey Smyser and his wife, Becky of Fort Collins, CO and Jason Smyser of Council Bluffs, IA; great-grandchildren, Jaclynn, Brooklynn, Tayler, and Cougar Andersen and Zach, Jessica, Megan and Alex Smyser, Nathan, Josh and Taylor Smyser; one great-great-grandson, Jordon Mort and sisters, Marc (George) Jones of Omaha, NE, and Roma Murdaugh of CA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Linnie Weiss; grandson, Joel; two sisters, Max and Betty; and a brother in infancy.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, June 18, 2007, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Atlantic with Reverends Dennis and Sally Meyer officiating.
Burial will be in the Shelby Cemetery, Shelby, IA, at 11:00 a.m. Monday morning, prior to the memorial service.
Visitation will start at 10:00 a.m. Sunday, with the family present to greet friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic.
The family is requesting memorials to be given to St. Paul's Lutheran Church and the American Heart Fund.
