Arlene Kluever

Arlene Kluever, 82, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, July 17, 2012, at the Heritage House. Arlene Kluever was born on December 30, 1929, to James and Otley McKee at Massena, Iowa. She spent her early years on the farm and then the family moved to town. During her four years of high school, Arlene played forward on the girls' basketball team. She graduated from Massena High School in 1947 and then attended summer school in Corning to receive her teaching certificate. She taught country school 2 miles east of Massena for one year. On May 1, 1948, Arlene married Gene C. Kluever at St. Patrick's Church in Massena, Iowa. They lived in Des Moines, Iowa, until April of 1951 when they moved to Atlantic, Iowa.

Arlene's main interest was her family and her home. She was a great homemaker and a wonderful cook. As a very talented seamstress, she made the family's clothes and made many beautiful quilts. She was an avid reader. She enjoyed square dancing, ballroom dancing and country dancing and travelled many miles in those pursuits, including nine winters as snow birds in South Texas. She also enjoyed browsing through antique and junk shops just for fun, looking for the perfect little treasure.

Arlene was an active member of SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church, serving in the choir and as president of the Altar and Rosary Society. She was a Brownie leader for several years and was also a member of the Hospital Auxiliary.

Arlene is survived by her husband of 64 years, Gene, of Atlantic, IA; three daughters, Connie (Jim) Lenius of Reinbeck, IA, Pat (Emery) Shutters of Reinbeck, IA, and Becky Kluever of Atlantic, IA; five grandchildren, Christi (Jayme) Allen of Ames, IA, Carrie (Dave) Linnenbrink of San Antonio, TX, Lisa Shutters of Atkins, IA, Jeff (Melanie) Lenius of Denver, CO, and Jamie (Ben) Showalter of Grundy Center IA; three great-grandchildren, Lily and Hannah Allen and Jillian Linnenbrink; sister, Charlotte Garside of Massena, IA; sister-in-law, Carole Waters of Cape Coral, FL; and numerous nieces and nephews, other family and friends.

Arlene was preceded in death by her parents, James and Otley McKee; brothers, Conrad, Kenneth and Bill McKee; and her sisters, Dolores Follmann and Elnora Follmann; parents-in-law, Bill and Bertha Waters; sisters-in-law, Lydia McKee, Gingi McKee and Jean McKee; brothers-in-law, Ralph Follmann, Roy Follmann, George Garside and John T. Waters.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, July 21, 2012, at SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Atlantic, Iowa.

A scriptural wake service will be held at 5:30 p.m. with visitation with family present from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Friday, July 20, 2012, at Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic, Iowa.

Burial will be in SS Peter & Paul Catholic Cemetery in Atlantic.

Memorials may be directed to Cass County Hospice, the Cass County Hospital Auxiliary or Alzheimer's or Cancer research.
