Avis Becker

Avis E. Becker, 86, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, May 6, 2015, at the Atlantic Nursing and Rehab Center.

Avis was born June 3, 1928, in Atlantic, Iowa, to William and Elizabeth (Bailey) Shepperd. She was raised in Atlantic and graduated from Atlantic High School with the class of 1946. She went to Carroll, Iowa, after graduation and received a Teaching Certificate. She taught country school until her marriage. She married Ross M. Becker on March 18, 1951, at the Presbyterian Church in Atlantic.

Avis attended the Cumberland United Methodist Church in Cumberland, Iowa. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Cass County Republican Women, Heritage House Guild and the Cass County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She was also an original member of the B & D Club.

Along with volunteer work, Avis enjoyed sewing and gardening. She was proud of her children and grandchildren.

Preceding Avis in death were her parents; husband, Ross; son, Bruce; and sisters, Doris Hilmer and Lois in infancy.

Surviving Avis are her children, Donna (Herschel) Owen of Lawson, MO, Steven Becker of Kansas City, MO, Daniel Becker of Carroll, IA, Diane Becker of Cumberland, IA, Lori (Barry) Schmidt of Massena, IA, Amy Jo (Ron) Stepanek of Yale, IA and Scott Becker of Cumberland, IA; grandchildren, Lisa Owen, Eric Owen, Stacey (Stanford) Rolenc, Adam Becker, Ashley Becker, Cole (Chantel) Schmidt, Kelsey Schmidt, Clayton Schmidt, Bailey Stepanek and Cody Stepanek; great-grandchildren, Weston, Garrett, Rhenn and Tessa Rolenc, Cameron Becker, Braylon and Brooklyn Schmidt, Teagan Peterson, Jace Hardisty and Lilly Schmidt; sister, Esta (Howard) Petersen of Welllington, CO; brothers-in-law, Dale Hilmer of Georgia and John (Alberta) Becker of Cumberland, IA; and sister-in-law, Helen West of LaSalle, IL.

Visitation with family will be from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m., Friday, May 8, 2015, at Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic, IA.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, May 9, 2015, at Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic with burial in the Atlantic Cemetery.
