Barbara Joann Hughes, 85, of Lewis, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, May 17, 2016, at Atlantic Specialty Care in Atlantic, Iowa.
She was born January 19, 1931, the daughter of Albert and Bertha (Mann) Rotach in Gulf Port, Mississippi. She was raised in New York State.
On October 9, 1948, she married Stewart Major Hughes in Newport, New York. She has lived in California, Wyoming and Iowa. She and Stewart were Florida snow birds. Stewart died June 17, 1999, while in Florida. She then returned to Lewis to spend the rest of her life.
While living in New York, Barbara worked at the MELES factory, making jewelry and sewing boxes, and for General Electric. While in Eagle Mountain, California, she worked as a waitress. After returning to Iowa, she was employed with Atlantic Nursing and Rehab in the old building, and then at the Griswold Care Center in their dietary departments.
She was a member of the First Church of Christ in Atlantic, serving as a greeter and helped with communion preparations. Barbara was a member of the DOES, Red Hat Society and long standing member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles since 1963. She served in many areas and held many offices while a member of the women's auxiliary. While in those offices, she helped raise money for Jimmy Durante's kids, the American Cancer Society and American Diabetes Association.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Bertha Rotach; her parents-in-law, Tom and Bertha Hughes; her husband, Stewart M. Hughes; brothers, Albert and Kenny and sister, Thaddeus Townsend.
She is survived by her children, Stewart A. (Carol) Hughes, of Lewis, IA, Terry (Lynda) Hughes, of Rawlins, WY, Debra (Rick) Sanny of Lewis, IA, and Cinderella Mayer of Marshalltown, IA; her grandchildren, Valerie Steggall of Marshalltown, IA, Albert Hughes of Anchorage, AK, Joanne (Doug) McGaffey of Austin, MN, Teresa Erickson (Jeremy Hardisty) of Cumberland, IA, Larry Kunz of Marshalltown, IA, Jennifer Hughes of Austin TX, Mike Hughes of Ostego, MN, Cassie (Moise) Bellio of St. Michael, MN, and Elizabeth Hughes of Seattle, WA; 14 great-grandchildren; brothers, Duke and Kenny of New York; sisters, Beatrice, Susan and Judy of New York and Veronica of New Hampshire; many other relatives and friends.
In accordance with Barb's wishes, cremation has taken place and there is no scheduled visitation.
A gathering of family and friends will take place at 12:00 p.m., Saturday, May 21, 2016, at 206 Court Street, Lewis, Iowa.
A private interment of ashes will take place at a later time.
