Barbara Jean Madsen

Barbara Jean Madsen, the daughter of Louie and Geraldine (Jerry) Campbell Jones, was born September 20, 1932, in Audubon, Iowa and died May 3, 2009 at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa at the age of 76 years, 7 months, and 13 days.
Barbara was baptized at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural Coon Rapids, Iowa and also confirmed there. She attended Audubon Schools and graduated from Audubon High School with the Class of 1950. After graduation she went to Western Union Telegraph School in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She went to work for Western Union in Ft. Dodge, Iowa and later came to Audubon and worked as a Secretary for Carlson Hybrid Seed Company. She was a Librarian for 21 years at Audubon Public Library and also worked for Kessler Funeral Home.
On January 15, 1954, she married John Kallesen at the Lutheran Church in Perry, Iowa. To this union two children were born: a daughter Karen Ranae and a son Curtis Lee. John died August 12, 1964 of a heart attack.
On November 13, 1966, Barbara married Elmer Rattenborg. He died November 24, 1976 of lung cancer.
On June 16, 1978, she married Alton Madsen at Our Saviours Lutheran Church in Audubon where she and Alton were members.
Preceding her in death were her husbands John Kallesen and Elmer Rattenborg; her parents; an infant granddaugher Rebecca Madsen; her step-daughter Mary Jane Spangler; her uncles: Les Minse, Charles L. Jones, Kenneth Fell; her sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Leona and Glen Fulton; Emmert Madsen and Dorothy Madsen; her nephews: Kenny Madsen and Harold Madsen, Jr.; and an infant niece Carissa Madsen.
Survivors include her husband Alton Madsen of Audubon, IA; her children: Karen and Richard Andersen of Iowa City, IA; Curtis and Carla Kallesen of Windsor Heights, IA; her step-children: Tim and Julia Madsen; Tom and Colleen Madsen; Phil Madsen, all of Audubon; Roger and Sarah Madsen of Guthrie Center, IA; her son-in-law Steve Spangler of Clarksdale, MO; her grandchildren: Brent and Melanie Andersen of North Liberty, IA; Rachel Ranae Andersen of Iowa City, IA; her step-grandchildren: Travis Madsen of West Des Moines, IA; Sophie Madsen and friend Kyle Wyatt both of St. Paul, MN; Matt and Erica Weber of Urbandale, IA; Nate and Miki Weber of Waukee, IA; Scott and Dani Weber of Cherokee, IA; Samuel and Elijah Madsen of Guthrie Center; three step-great-grandchildren; her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Einar Madsen of Audubon; Harold and Betty Madsen of Glidden, IA; Maynard and Rose Madsen and Leo and Janice Madsen, all of Audubon; her uncles and aunts: Ralph (Chis) Jones of Audubon; Reno Stoffersen of Harlan, IA; Helen Mense of St. Louis, MO; Myrtle Jones of Northwood, IA; Gwen Fell of Wichita, KS; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Cemetery:
Interment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Audubon.

Visitation:
The family will meet friends Wednesday evening at 6:00 at Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon.

Service:
Funeral services will be Thursday, May 7, 2009 at 10:30 A.M. at Our Saviours Lutheran Church in Audubon, IA.
