Barbara Newman

Barbara Jean Newman, 75, of Lyman, Iowa, passed away Monday, September 23, 2013, at the Cass County Memorial Hospital.

She was born April 5, 1938, west of Atlantic, Iowa, on the family farm, to Leo and Verda (Guske) Thurman. Barb was raised in the Atlantic area where she attended country schools and graduated from Atlantic High School with the class of 1956. She attended Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Missouri, for one year. Barb was united in marriage to Dennis Newman on June 29, 1958, in Atlantic, Iowa. One week after the wedding they moved to Lyman, where they have made their home for over 55 years.

Barb worked for Schuler Manufacturing near Lyman from 1977 until her retirement. She was a member of the Noble United Methodist Church in Lyman since 1958 and had served as church secretary.

Barb loved to travel and carefully planned out each trip. She had recently completed her quest to visit all fifty states with Hawaii being one of her favorites. She enjoyed shopping, especially for shoes; a trait she fondly shared with her two granddaughters.

Fall was Barb's favorite season and she enjoyed picnicking, spending crisp evenings on her front porch and walking amongst the colorful leaves.

Nothing compared, however, to the love she had for her children, grandchildren, and most recently, her great-grandson. There was nothing she enjoyed more than reminiscing and giggling with them over all the many, many good times they had together.

She is survived by her husband, Dennis Newman of Lyman; her daughter, Kimberly (Terry) Whiley of Griswold, IA; her son, David (Gale) Newman of Lyman, IA; her grandchildren: Kelsey (Brian) Riley of Waukee, IA, Mitch Whiley of Griswold, IA and Shinelle Newman (special friend Sammy Pattavina) of Omaha, NE; her great-grandson, Brayden Riley of Waukee, IA; her brother, Ronald (Alyce) Thurman of Ames, IA; her sister-in-law, Janice (Don) Gray of Hampton, IA and many other relatives and friends.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Leo and Verda Thurman and her parents-in-law, Roy and Angela Newman.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 26, 2013, at Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic, Iowa.

Memorial services for Barb will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, September 27, 2013, at Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic, Iowa.

A private family interment will take place.
