Barbara Peterson

Barbara Lea Peterson, 78, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Thursday, February 23, 2012, at the Cass County Hospice Center in Atlantic.


She was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa, July 8, 1933 to Harry and Opal (Middleton) Yost. Barb graduated from Anita High School. She was united in marriage to Don Peterson in Anita, Iowa. To this union four children were born, Bennie, Ronda, Robin and Mark.

Barb and Don owned and operated a Sears store in Leon, Iowa, for many years.
After moving to Atlantic she worked at the Elks Lodge for 10 years and the Hallmark Card Company for a number of years before her retirement. Barb was a member of the United Church of Christ in Atlantic. She was also a past president of B.P.O. Does and bowled on many bowling leagues. Barb enjoyed playing scrabble, doing crossword books, watching Nascar Racing on T.V., reading Janet Daily books and being with her children, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband, Don, of Atlantic; her children; Bennie and his wife Bonnie Peterson, of Leonardtown, Maryland, Ronda and her husband James Butcher of Atlantic, Iowa, Robin Peterson of Atlantic, Iowa and Mark and his wife Carol of Winterset, Iowa; her grandchildren, Brooke (Wesley) Carter, Nicole Peterson, Justin (Libby) Butcher, James (Holli) Peterson and Jeff Peterson; her great-grandchildren, Tyra and Dylan Countis, Jackson Carter, Payton Butcher, Emma and Tate Peterson; sisters-in-law, Darlene Pieken and Norma Brix; brother-in-law Jerry (Betty) Peterson; many brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ed and Opal Yost; brothers-in-law, Donald Brix and Leo Pieken; and other relatives.


Visitation will be Sunday, February 26, 2012, from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. at the United Church of Christ in Atlantic, Iowa. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, February 27, 2012, at the United Church of Christ in Atlantic. Burial of ashes will take place at a later date.
