Bernice Baier

January 31, 1924 — August 23, 2012

Bernice Mary Brix was born January 31, 1924, the daughter of Henry and Grace (Walter) Brix at her parent's home east of Atlantic and passed away Thursday, August 23, 2012, at the Atlantic Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Atlantic.

She attended Brushy Point School (Grove #1) for 8 years and graduated from the Atlantic High School in 1941.

On January 27, 1943, Bernice was married to George Mahlandt Baier in Omaha, Nebraska. In 1946, the couple started farming 2 miles north of Atlantic on a farm on Buck Creek Road. In March of 1947, the family moved to the Gus Walter farm. In 1956, the couple bought a 160 acre farm from Tony Mickelson.

Bernice was a life long member of Zion Lutheran Church in Atlantic. She taught Sunday school for 20 years and also taught Bible School. Bernice was a member of several different church circles, the NGA Neighbor Club, past President of the Cass County Porkettes, district Porkettes Past Vice President, Iowa Porkettes Treasurer and chaired a number of National Porkette committees.

She was employed at the Carl Hoffman Loan Company and for Fred Taylor Finance prior to working for Work Force Development of Iowa for 26 years. There Bernice was honored for her outstanding senior work.

Bernice was preceded in death by her daughter, Sharon Tessman; her parents; her grandson, Todd Tessman; her brother and sister-in-law, Ivan (Burnice) Brix and her brothers-in-law, Arnold Baier and Leo Spiker.

Bernice is survived by her husband, G. Mahlandt Baier; her son, Lynn (Barbara) Baier all of Atlantic; her son-in-law, Melvin Tessman of Atlantic; her grandchildren, Janna (Tawfik) Azim of Sacramento, California, Stacy (Gavin) Lendt of Olathe, Kansas, Sarah (Ruben) Newell of Denison, Samantha Baier of Maryville, Missouri, and Ross Baier of Ames; her step-grandchildren, Guy Parrott of Council Bluffs, and Katie Parrott of Wiota; her great-grandchildren, Alex Taylor of Rayburn, Missouri, Reese and Loren Long of Wiota; her brother-in-law, Randall (Phyllis) Baier of Griswold; her sister-in-law, Dorothy Spiker of Newton; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 28, 2012, at 2:00 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Atlantic. There is no scheduled visitation.

Burial will be in the Atlantic Cemetery.
