Betty Louise Henriksen, the daughter of Glen and Esther (Heiken) Hindman, was born April 5, 1933 on her parents’ farm near Belgrade, Nebraska, and died June 20, 2018 at the Audubon County Memorial Hospital in Audubon, Iowa, at the age of 85 years, 2 months, and 15 days.
When Betty was 5 years old, they moved to a farm near Viola Center, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at the First Methodist Church in Audubon. She started Kindergarten at Viola Schools until that March when the family moved to another farm. She attended Melville #1 through the 8th grade. The family moved to a farm near Exira in 1949. Betty then graduated from the Audubon High School with the Class of 1951. In June of 1951, she attended Commercial Extension in Omaha, Nebraska, training to be a secretary and graduating in February of 1952.
On August 26, 1951, she was united in marriage to Virgil Henriksen at the First Methodist Church in Audubon, Iowa. They were blessed with two sons Alan and John. She was employed with U.S. Cold Storage for a short time and then worked for Mack Trucks, Inc. in Omaha until 1958, when they moved to their farm northwest of Audubon.
Betty was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Audubon. They were members of several travel clubs, the Audubon County Travelers, the Family Campers, and the Excel Campers Club. Virgil and Betty enjoyed Western Dancing, Square Dancing and doing the Two Step. She loved working outside with Virgil until her health would not allow her to. She enjoyed anything she could do with a needle which included making and selling crafts. She liked Hardanger and won many awards at the Iowa State Fair. She enjoyed spending time with her grandson Benjamin, and loved watching him in sports, especially swimming.
She is preceded in death by her husband Virgil E. Henriksen; her son Alan Henriksen, her parents; her mother-in-law and father-in-law Gilbert and Laura Henriksen; and her brother-in-law Willis Stone.
Survivors include her son John and wife JoEllen Henriksen and grandson Benjamin Henriksen all of Audubon, Iowa; her brother LaVerne and wife Peggy Hindman of Springfield, Missouri; her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Lois and husband Clifford Olsen of Creston, Iowa, Lyle and wife Evelyn Henriksen of Corning, Iowa, Gaylord and wife Mary Henriksen of Afton, Iowa, and Donna Stone of Kent, Washington; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
The family will meet with friends Sunday, June 24, 2018, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon, Iowa. Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Doug Opp on Monday, June 25, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Audubon, Iowa. Interment will be in the Arlington Heights Cemetery in Audubon. The casket bearers will be David Witt, Brad Hemmingsen, Charles Hansen, Greg Hansen, Daren Lauritsen, and Merlene Ostebee.
