Betty Zanders

Betty Jane Zanders, 87, of Anita, Iowa, passed away Monday, November 28, 2016 at Atlantic Specialty Care in Atlantic, Iowa.

Betty J. Zanders was born May 14, 1929, in Anita, Iowa, the daughter of Ross W. and Hazel A. (McDermott) Lewis. She attended Anita public schools, graduating from Anita High School in 1947.
On June 18, 1952, she married Lloyd George (Joe) Zanders at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. To this union three children were born, Mark, Karen and Debra.

Betty was employed at the State Health Department in Des Moines, Iowa, was a telephone operator and bookkeeper for the Anita Telephone Company, and helped Lloyd maintain the family farm.

She joined the Anita United Methodist Church in 1944 and was a member of the UMW Circle. She also was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Betty was a 55 year member of the Grand Chapter of the Iowa Eastern Star. She held a number of positions, as well as serving as Worthy Matron in the Anita Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star. Betty was also a member of the Greenfield Chapter.
Growing up on the farm, Betty loved working in the fields windrowing hay, and spending time with her mother in the garden, canning and freezing the vegetables they grew. Later in life, she could be found relaxing with her Schnauzer, Pepper, in her flower garden or watching the squirrels and birds at the feeders that she tended. Most of all, Betty cherished the memories of trips with her family and time spent with her children and grandson, Eric, who was her pride and joy.

Betty is survived by her son, Mark Lewis Zanders of Comox, British Columbia; her daughter, Karen Ann (Leon) Vogl; and her grandson, Eric Joseph Vogl all of Anita; as well as cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ross Lewis and Hazel McDermott Lewis; her husband, Lloyd Zanders; and her infant daughter, Debra Jo.

Visitation with family will be from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m., Thursday, December 1, 2016, at Hockenberry Family Care in Anita, Iowa, with an Eastern Star service at 5:00 p.m.

Funeral Services will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, December 2, 2016, at Hockenberry Family Care in Anita, Iowa, with burial in Evergreen Cemetery in Anita, Iowa.

Memorials may be left to the families wishes.
