Billie Bryan Parker was born January 1, 1927, in Anita, Iowa, the son of Bryan and Carrie (Davenport) Parker and passed away Tuesday, April 12, 2011, in Des Moines, Iowa.
After graduating from Anita High School in 1944, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the Philippines during WWII, and later served during the Korean Conflict.
Bill worked 40 years for the United States Postal Service in Anita, Iowa, retiring as Postmaster in 1987. He married Carole Brown in 1953. They were the parents of three children, Mick, Patti and Dan.
Bill was a volunteer fireman for many years and was one of the first Red Cross First Aid instructors in southwest Iowa. He served on the Anita Public Library Board and the Anita School Board of Directors. He enjoyed acting and directing as a member of the Anita Community Theater.
Bill's passion was golf. He was instrumental in the founding of Crestwood Hills. Bill and Carole were clubhouse managers for several years after retiring from the post office. His favorite times were golfing with the "Wobblies" anytime the snow wasn't flying.
Bill will be remembered for his quick wit, story-telling, love of family, troll-hunting with his grandchildren, and his good looks. He enjoyed playing pool, crossword puzzles and being a Democrat.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Carole, of 54 years; sister Glada; and brothers, Gene and Frank.
Surviving Bill are his three children, Mick (Dawn) of Iowa Falls, Patti (Butch Brown) of West Des Moines and Dan (Liz) of Greer, South Carolina; a brother, Jim, of Omaha; grandchildren, Kenna (Kelly) Freestone, Parker Gibson, Graham Gibson, Aishah Parker, Kelly Jean Parker, Bryan Parker and Alex Parker; great-granddaughter, Ayden Rose; and a special friend, Martha Stephenson. Also surviving are sisters-in-law, Bonnie Parker, Winifred Mueller, Donnabelle Willis, Nola Brown and Genevieve Brown.
Visitation will he held Friday, April, 15, 2011, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Hockenberry Family Care in Anita, Iowa.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, April 16, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. also at Hockenberry Family Care in Anita, Iowa.
Private family burial of cremated remains will be held at a time prior to the service at Evergreen Cemetery in Anita, Iowa.
A luncheon will be held at the Anita Community Center following the memorial service.
Memorials may be made to the family for designation at a later date.
