Calvin was baptized and confirmed at Mount Zion Evangelical Church in Viola Center. He attended Viola Center Consolidated Schools and graduated with the High School Class of 1939. He then started farming. On October 8, 1950, he was united in marriage to Ruth Anna Marie Hansen at the Ebenezer Lutheran Church west of Audubon. Five children David, Lois, Eugene, Neal, and Paul were born to this union. They farmed for many years before moving into Audubon in 1969. He was employed as a truck driver for Williams’ Truck Lines for several years. Later, he worked as a welder at Emmert Manufacturing for many years until he retired in 1986. Six months after retiring, he returned to the work force fulltime and worked in various jobs. Ruth died March 15, 1992. Calvin continued working until he was forced to retire following heart surgery in 1998, but still helped his children with various projects. Calvin moved to Perry, Iowa, in 2005 and then later moved to Richfield in 2009. Calvin was a long time member of the Assembly of God Churches in Gray, Iowa, Audubon, and later Harlan, Iowa. He was very musically talented and was able to play the piano, accordion, and the keyboard.
