Carl Kirkpatrick

Carl Reed Kirkpatrick born October 23, 1919, in Guthrie County, Iowa, to Eugene and Elsie Irene (Caltrider) Kirkpatrick and passed away Wednesday, May 5, 2010, at the Guthrie County Hospital in Guthrie Center, Iowa.


He was a life long Guthrie County resident, graduating from Casey High School in 1938. As a teenager, Carl worked as a milkman with his brothers during the Depression and thru the mid-1930s. He worked as a Station Agent for the railroad during the war years until the early 1940s. On June 7, 1941, he was united in marriage to Lila Gay Evelyn Mark at the Casey United Methodist Church.

Carl entered into the Army in 1945, and returned to the railroad upon his discharge. Carl began farming in 1951. During his farming years, Carl also worked part-time as a rural mail carrier. After his retirement from farming, Carl worked as a full-time carrier until 1985.

Carl was a member of the United Methodist Church in Casey, Iowa. He was a member of the church men's group and a trustee for the church for many years. Carl was a member of several community organizations including: Purity Lodge # 283 Masonic Lodge, the American Legion, Chapter Order of the Eastern Star #343 and a charter member of the Lions Club since 1969. He was a member of the Farm Bureau, the Rural Letter Carriers Association and a Thompson Township school Board member.

After retirement, Carl and Lila Gay enjoyed their many winters together as snowbirds in Arizona. Carl also enjoyed his coin collection and tracing and recording his family's history.

Carl is survived by his wife Lila Gay of Casey, Iowa; his children, Sondra Plowman and her husband, James of Westlaco, Texas, Carol McCuen and her husband, Lloyd of Casey, Iowa, Ken Kirkpatrick and his wife, Pat of Seneca, Illinois, and Todd Kirkpatrick and his wife, Connie of Plymouth, Iowa; his grandchildren, Randy Plowman and his wife Sonja, Cindy Kornele and her husband, Larry, Kurt McCuen and his wife, Teresa, Teresa Garside and her husband, Dana, Lisa McClung and her husband, Colby, Jennifer Kirkman and her husband, Bart, Jason Kirkpatrick, Matt Kirkpatrick and his wife, Jamie, and Sara Kirkpatrick and her fiancé, Clay Ivonavitch; 20 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Eugene and Elsie; his sister, Cleone; his brothers, Dale and Bruce; and his grandson, Clint Kirkpatrick.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 8, 2010, at 3:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Casey, Iowa, with the visitation two hours prior to the service, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., also at the United Methodist Church in Casey, Iowa.

Burial will be in the Dalmanutha Cemetery.
