Carol Hettinger

Carol J. Hettinger, 78, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Saturday, May 30, 2009, at her home.

Carol Jane (Flynn) Hettinger was born in her grandmother's home in Remsen, Iowa, on October 15, 1930, to John and Cecilia (Ahmann) Flynn. She lived most of her childhood and early adult life in Sioux City, IA. She graduated from the Cathedral High School in Sioux City in 1948. After high school, she worked in banking at the Woodbury and Toy National Banks, where she met her husband, Wayne Hettinger. They were married September 6, 1954, at St. Bonifice Church in Sioux City. Carol then took on the task of homemaking and raising their six children. The family moved several times throughout the years for the advancement of Wayne's career. In addition to Sioux City, IA, they also lived in Fonda, IA, Atlantic, IA, Holstein, IA, Bethany, MO, Ida Grove, IA, Carrollton, MO, eventually retiring in Atlantic, IA.

Carol was always active in the church where they were living. She loved to play cards and was active in several bridge clubs. She enjoyed her children and grandchildren and was very excited with the recent additions of 3 great-grandchildren. She loved traveling to visit family and friends and did so as often as possible.

Carol is survived by her six children, John (Stephanie) Hettinger of Alexander, AR, Bill Hettinger of Phoenix, AZ, Ruth (Jon) Jeambey of Naperville, IL, Ken (Nancy) Hettinger of LeMars, IA, Steve Hettinger of Berwyn, IL, and Joe Hettinger of Aurora, IL; nine grandchildren, Ryan Jeambey, Ross Jeambey, Jon Jeambey, Jackie Jeambey, Ashley (Brent) Den Ouden, Shannon Hettinger, Nathan Hettinger, Michael Hettinger, and Christopher Hettinger; three great-grandchildren, Raleigh Hettinger, Braelynn Den Ouden and Addison Den Ouden; two sisters, Kathleen (Bill) O'Brian of Jefferson, IA, and Rita Flynn of Coon Rapids, IA; two brothers, Jim (Kathy) Flynn of West Des Moines, IA, and Tom (Tamara) Flynn of Spirit Lake, IA; and her special friend, Bud Jorgensen of Atlantic, IA.

Carol is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Wayne; her sisters, Cecile Hare, Darlene Jacobson, Mary Slate and Norma Tague, and her brother, Robert Flynn.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 3, 2009, at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Atlantic.

Burial will be in the Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery in Atlantic, Iowa.

Visitation will be from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 2, 2009, at Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic, with the family present to greet friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. A scriptural wake service will be held at 7:30 p.m., on Tuesday, at Hockenberry's.
