Carol Wilcox, 87, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Saturday morning, September 19, 2015, surrounded by family.
Carol Ann Blackmer was born May 1, 1928, to Clyde and Marie (Langbehn) in Des Moines, Iowa. The youngest daughter of seven children, Carol spent most of her childhood in Casey, Iowa. She graduated from Fairfax High School in Fairfax, Virginia, in 1946. She received an RN degree from Iowa Lutheran School of Nursing in Des Moines. While at nurses training, she met a young medical student named Dwain Wilcox. After graduation she moved to Iowa City and worked at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
Carol married Dwain Edwin Wilcox on August 6, 1950. They settled in Atlantic, Iowa, in 1952 and raised their family. Dwain had a Family Medical Practice for 30 years, and Carol was active in the community and within St Paul's Lutheran Church. She volunteered as a Girl Scout leader, with the community blood bank, hospital auxiliary, Arts Council, and the food pantry. She was an active member of St. Paul's Women's group. Carol was an excellent baker and cook, an avid bridge player and a diehard Hawkeye fan. She enjoyed traveling with her husband and hosting large family gatherings.
Survivors include three children: Tressa Wilcox and husband Ken Burkhart of Atlantic, IA, Sarah Vanderstoep and husband Rick of Edgerton, MN, and John Wilcox and wife Carole of Peoria, AZ; eight grandchildren: Molly Beatty and husband Matt, Katie Ilten and husband Peter, Robin Simonson and husband Brock, Kristen Peterson and husband Dane, Abby Burkhart, Kelly Vanderstoep and husband Ben King, Anna Wilcox, and Adam Wilcox; four great-grandchildren and four great-grand dogs.
She is preceded in death by her husband Dwain, her parents, three sisters and three brothers.
Visitation with family will be from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m., Friday, September 25, 2015, at Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic, Iowa.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, September 26, 2015, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Atlantic, Iowa, followed by a church hosted luncheon at the Atlantic Golf and Country Club.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St Paul's Lutheran Church or the Atlantic Public Library.
