Carolyn Fairfield, 73, of Anita, Iowa, formerly of Adair, Iowa, passed away Friday, March 20, 2009, at Colonial Manor in Anita.
Carolyn Ruth Murphy was born September 13, 1935, the daughter of Thomas E. and Frances L. (Voss) Murphy in Yale, Iowa. She lived in Adair County most of her life, graduating from Adair High School in 1954. On December 8, 1963, she was united in marriage to Milburn (Mel) Lavane Fairfield at the Adair United Methodist Church.
Carolyn worked as a telephone operator. Mel and Carolyn owned and operated the Blue Goose Tavern in Adair for 10 years. She was a bookkeeper for D&P Service Station, worked as a cashier at the 4 Sons Convenience Store in Adair, and also drove school bus for the Adair-Casey school system for 18 years.
She was a life long member of the Adair United Methodist Church, a member of the United Methodist Women, the Sunnyhill Cemetery Board, and the VFW Auxiliary.
Carolyn will be remembered as a positive, selfless, giving woman, willing to help anyone, and never wanting anything in return. She loved her family, raising her children to be strong and independent. She filled her spare time with crafts. Whether it was crocheting an afghan or doing beadwork, she enjoyed sharing her creations with family and friends.
Carolyn is survived by her children, Lori Fairfield (Mike Rand) of Dallas, TX, Todd (Melanie) Fairfield of Tokyo, Japan, Brad (Carrie) Fairfield of Medina, OH; her grandchildren, Roman and Zoe Rand of Dallas, TX, and Leah Mae and Dollaress Fairfield of Tokyo, Japan; her brother, Joe (Mary Lou) Murphy of Centerville, IA, and her sisters, Mary Ellen Miller of Atlantic, IA and Anne (Dick) Peterson of Anita, IA.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas E. and Frances L. Murphy; her husband Milburn (Mel) Fairfield; and her sister, Martha L. Huffman.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, March 24, 2009, with a luncheon to follow at the Adair United Methodist Church.
Burial of cremated remains will be at the Sunnyhill Cemetery in Adair following the luncheon.
Visitation will be held on Monday, March 23, 2009, from 2:00 to 7:30 p.m. with the family present from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Hockenberry Funeral Home in Adair, IA.
