Carolyn Uhlman, 80, of Adair, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, November 1, 2011, at her home in Adair, Iowa.
She was born February 16, 1931, in Farragut, Iowa, to Claude K. and Ruth M. (Utterback) Phillips. Born with a twin sister, Carolyn was the middle of five children. Carolyn and her twin sister, Marilyn, played AAU basketball during their high school years. She attended Maryville State Teachers College for her teaching certificate. She taught grade school in Henderson and Adair before her marriage. She was united in marriage to Phil J. Uhlman December 1, 1951.
Carolyn was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Adair since her marriage. She returned to teaching after graduating from Drake University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. Carolyn taught 1st grade for three years in Anita before returning to Adair-Casey to teach. She taught 4th grade until her retirement.
She enjoyed her home, playing solitaire, and loved her cats. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren fondly remember her graham crackers and milk, fabulous homemade noodles, orange fluff and cherry dessert.
Carolyn is survived by her daughter, Debra (Dennis) Lemke of Adair, IA; her son, Phil Uhlman, Jr. of Adair; her grandchildren, Lisa (Paul) Dosal of Tampa, FL, David (Kelli) Lemke of Guthrie Center, IA, Ryan (Alexandra) Lemke of West Des Moines, IA, Josh (Tracy) Uhlman of Earlham, IA, and Jared (Nichole) Uhlman of Des Moines; her great-grandchildren, Taylor, Morgan and Shay Lemke, Louis and John Paul Dosal and Jake Uhlman; her brother, Rex (Kim) Phillips of Texas; her sisters-in-law, Betty Phillips of Dubuque, IA and Gladys (Norman) Kading of Casey, IA; her brother-in-law, Max Uhlman of Adair, IA; and many nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Phil J. Uhlman, her parents, Claude and Ruth Phillips; her parents-in-law, John and Anna Uhlman; her infant son, John Claude Uhlman; her twin sister, Marilyn Swett; her brothers, Carol Leon Phillips and Max Phillips; and her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, K. Dean Swett, Myrna Phillips, Jack Uhlman, Beverly Uhlman and DeLos Farnsworth Jr.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, November 5, 2011, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Adair, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Friday, November 4, 2011, at Hockenberry Funeral Home in Adair. Burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Adair.
