He spent two years in the United States Army from 1954 to 1956. Then he went to work for Safeway Stores in Spencer, Carroll and Atlantic, Iowa. Carroll met Dorothy Kunz when he was working in Spencer and they were married July 15, 1961, in Mallard, Iowa. Then they moved to Carroll where their three children were born. In 1969, they moved to Atlantic and lived on Roosevelt Drive for 42 years. They moved to the Country Green Condos on 14th Street in 2011.

Carroll got bored after he retired and started going to auctions and garage sales which led him to his next venture. This hobby turned him into redoing anything he could get his hands on such as antiques and making furniture and many other things out of old barn boards. He then proceeded to sell his items in the stores in Walnut, Elkhorn and Atlantic, Iowa. He enjoyed meeting all the wonderful people he came to know from this wonderful hobby.
Throughout all the years in Atlantic, Carroll was a member of SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church. He was on the Parish Council for a time and also served as an usher. Carroll was a member of the Atlantic schools booster club and spent a lot of time working the schools sporting events. He was also a member of the Elks Club.
