Carroll Channon Sampson, the son of Ernest Carroll and Thelma Glyde (Jensen) Sampson, was born January 3, 1944, at the Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, and died May 7, 2018, at the Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa at the ag of 74 years, 4 months, and 4 days.
Carroll attended Exira Community Schools graduating with the High School Class of 1962. Following high school he attended a refrigeration technical school in Nebraska. He then moved to Marshalltown, Iowa where he was employed with Fischer Controls until he joined the Iowa National Guard in 1969.
On December 21, 1969, he was united in marriage to Linda Schnelle at the Zion Lutheran Church in Laurel, Iowa. Two sons Jim and Robert were born to this union. In the early in 1970’s they moved back to the Exira area so Carroll could help his father operate the family farm. They grew row crops and raised cattle and chickens. He also helped his father operate Sampson Farm Drainage for several years. In the late 1980’s he was employed with Henningsen Construction in Atlantic, Iowa, where he drove truck and was a mechanic for several years. He also worked as an electrician for several companies in the area until he suffered a stroke and was forced to retire in 2009.
Carroll loved to mow yards for his friends and family. He always had a large vegetable garden. He enjoyed putting puzzles together, playing Dominoes, and was an avid fisherman.
Preceding him in death was his parents Ernest and Thelma Sampson; his grandparents Ralph and Carolina Sampson; his great grandparents Herman and Rose Sampson; his brother Alan Sampson; his aunts: Marie Mushruss and Carol May Rixen; his uncles: Albert Sampson, Harold Sampson, and Sam Sampson.
Survivors include his wife Linda Sampson of Exira, Iowa; his sons: Jim Sampson and Cindy Andrews of Exira, Robert and wife Lauri Sampson of Atlantic, Iowa; his grandchildren: Christel Buskirk of Atlantic, Arliss Norton of Manning, Iowa, Jimmie Smith and Albert Smith both of Atlantic; his great grandchildren: Ciera Nichols, Beau Buskirk, Mikal Buskirk, Travis Griffith, Jacob Griffith, and Danyel Griffith; his sister-in-law Wanda Sampson of Exira; his nephews: Bill Simon of Anita, Iowa, and Bob Simon of Portsmouth, Iowa; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Glen Meyers on Saturday, May 12, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at the Exira Christian Church in Exira. Interment will be in the Exira Cemetery. Honorary casket bearers will be Ed Mack, Bullet, and Jim Hennick. Casket bearers will be John Marshall, Bart Peppers, Randy Thompson, Reese Wicker, Dave Bintner, and Chuck Sorensen. The family will meet with friends Friday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Kessler Funeral Home in Exira.
