Carroll Hayes, 93, of Atlantic, Iowa passed away on October 22, 2024, in his home. Carroll was born on August 20, 1931, to Otto and Lola (Howie) Hayes. He married the love of his life, Joyce Hooten on June 4, 1955, at St. Patrick’s Church in Lenox, Iowa. Carroll joined the Marine Corp and served in the Korean War from 1952-1954, working on Corsair airplane engines.
Carroll went to Iowa State University and received his private land surveyors license in 1958. He worked many evenings after his county job from 5:00-9:00 pm, but never on Sundays, that was church day. Carroll worked for the county for 44 years, retiring in 1993 as assistant county engineer. He came out of retirement to oversee the inspection on the I-80 E bound rest area outside of Adair, Iowa.
His favorite past times include collecting, documenting, and appraising coins, playing cards with great friends for 40 years and spending time with his family and grandchildren. He also worked many hours collecting funds to build the Parish Center. Carroll belonged to the Knights of Columbus and is a lifetime member of the VFW. Carroll and Joyce took many bus trips nationwide and cruises to Alaska and Hawaii.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce, of 69 years, sons Michael (Lori) Hayes of Atlantic, IA; David (Christine) Hayes of Boure End, England, Martin (Nita) Hayes of Monks Corner, SC; and Daughter Teresa (Gary) Campbell of Hot Springs, SD; Grandchildren Dustin (Jodie) Hayes, Ashley (Michael) Coffman, Jenny Hayes, Heather Hayes, Max Hayes, Matthew (Betty) Campbell, Anne (Jeffrey) Brown, Emily(Pete) Johnson, Daniel Campbell, Rebecca (Chris) Howard, Antone Campbell, Amii Nolan, Cassie (Adam) Johnson, Zachary Hayes, Kaila (Will)Stoneham, Adrian (Travis) Still, and 25 great grandchildren; and a sister, Donna Copic.
He is preceded in death by his parents Otto and Lola (Howie) Hayes, four brothers Lyle, Gene, Clive, and Thomas Hayes, and a grandson, Brandon Campbell.
The Mass of Christian Burial for Carroll will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, October 26, 2024, at the Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Atlantic, IA, with Fr. Trevor Chicoine as the Celebrant. Interment with military rites conducted by the United States Marine Corps & Atlantic Color Iowa Guard will follow the mass at Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Cemetery in Atlantic. Following the committal service a luncheon will be held at the Parish Center of the Church.
Visitation with the family will be held from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., with a Rosary Service at 6:00 p.m., on Friday, October 25, 2025, at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Atlantic, IA.
