Charles Kinen

Charles (Chuck) William Kinen was born in Atlantic, Iowa, February 20,1941, to William F. and Gladys C. (Miller) Kinen. He entered into rest at his home September 3, 2011, at the age of 70.Chuck was raised on a farm north of Wiota and graduated from the Wiota High School in 1959. He attended Northwest Missouri State College before joining the Army National Guard in 1960, where he served six years.

He married Colette Devereaux October 8, 1960, in Wiota, Iowa, and they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last year. They were blessed with two daughters, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Chuck was a sales representative for Walnut Grove Products/Cargill for 40 years. He enjoyed agriculture and his customers were like family to him. He was always in the top ten of the sales force and enjoyed many distinguished sales award trips. In 1998 he was elected Cass County Supervisor. He serviced on the Emergency Management, 911, Public Safety and Home Health Boards. Growing Cass County and managing the budget was always a challenge and concern. Chuck also worked part time at Howard's Clothing in Atlantic and had a great time getting to know the high school students who were employed at the store.

He was a member of SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church and a 50 year member of the Knights of Columbus. He was both Past President of the Atlantic Golf & Country Club and of the Atlantic Booster Club. Chuck helped raise funds for the Cass County Memorial Hospital Foundation and the Heritage House Good Samaritan Fund. He also volunteered by installing Lifelines. Chuck loved people and was always willing to lend a helping hand.

Chuck had a love for the game of golf and played at every opportunity. He was a devoted Boston Red Sox, Iowa Hawkeyes and Atlantic Trojan fan. He had some great times going fishing in Canada, Minnesota and South Dakota with his buddies and son-in-law.

His family was very important to him and he loved spending time with them. He was always there to support his daughters and grandchildren in their various activities. He got to watch grandson Bryant play basketball from junior high through varsity and was his number one fan. He loved every minute of it.

Chuck is survived by his wife, Colette; daughters, Lynn (Michael) McCabe of Creston, Iowa, and Tara (Nathan) Trexel of Altoona, Iowa; grandchildren, Brittany (Ryan) Shinn of Creston, Bryant McCabe of Creston, Regan, Conner and Noah Trexel of Altoona; great-granddaughter, Henley Shinn; brother, Eugene (Shirley) Kinen of Atlantic; sister, Doris (Waldo) Leander of Cedar Bluffs, Nebraska; twin sister, Charlotte (Roy) McLaughlin of Caldwell, Idaho; brother, Larry (Cheryl) Kinen of Papilliion, Nebraska; and sister, Mary Jo Kinen and friend Kari Kaiser of Omaha, Nebraska; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and niece, Claudette Kinen.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2011, at Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic with a prayer vigil at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Atlantic at 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, Sept 7, 2011, with a luncheon to follow in the Catholic Parish Center.

Memorial funds will be distributed in memory of Chuck.
