Clair Mattheis

H. Clair Mattheis, 85, passed away Tuesday, August 30, 2011, at the Cass County Memorial Hospital, Atlantic, Iowa.

Clair was born October 31, 1925, the son of John Weber and Lulu Belle (Howell) Mattheis northeast of Cumberland, in Cass County, Iowa. He was a life long Cass County resident. He graduated from Cumberland High School in 1943 and started farming with his father.
On December 31, 1949, Clair was united in marriage to Shirley Mae Anderson in College Springs, Iowa. In 1963, Clair and Shirley purchased their own farm and lived there since.

Clair was a long time member of the Pine Grove United Methodist Church. He was a farmer by trade, but his true passion was tinkering with old cars. He also enjoyed motorcycling. He dearly loved the time he spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Lulu Mattheis; an infant sister, Phyllis Jean Mattheis; and his sister and brother-in-law, Oda Darlene and Emert Euken.

Clair is survived by his wife of 61 years, Shirley Mattheis of Massena; his children, Alan Mattheis of Massena, Sandra (Doyle) Kneisel of Griswold and Nina (Larry) Carley of Clarendon Hills, Illinois; his brother, Phil (Marian) Mattheis of Des Moines, IA; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; several nieces and a nephew; other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 3, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic, Iowa, with a visitation two hours prior to the service, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. also at Hockenberry's.

Lunch will be served in Hockenberry's Communtiy Room following the service. Burial will follow in the Massena Center Cemetery.
