Clair William Huff, the son of Wilson and Nellie Rumelhart Huff, was born February 23, 1912, at his parents home in Audubon Township, Audubon County, southeast of Exira, Iowa and died February 25, 2010, at the Exira Care Center in Exira, Iowa at the age of 98 years and 2 days.
Clair was baptized at the Adair United Methodist Church in Adair, Iowa. He attended rural schools southeast of Exira and the Emma Ludwig School. He then helped operate the family farm with his father.
On February 23, 1933, he was united in marriage to June Nadine Heckman at the First Methodist Church in Maryville, Missouri in a double ceremony with her brother, Glenard H. Heckman and Frankie Mae Bontrager. Clair and June were the parents of three sons Donald, Robert, and Richard and two foster daughters, Debbie and Shari. In 1943 they purchased a farm north of the family farm which they lived on and operated their entire married life.
Over the years they opened their home to girls who lived with them. They included, Vera Jessen, Hazel Brownsbarger, Freda Rumelhart, and Norma Rumelhart and foster daughters Patty Nelson, Ruth Ann Christensen, and Debbie Berger. Clair and June retired from farming and continued to live on their farm. June died July 23, 1992. Clair stayed on the farm until he moved to the Exira Care Center in February of 2003.
Clair was a long-time member of the Adair United Methodist Church in Adair. He enjoyed spending time with relatives, farming, but especially spending time at sale barns in Audubon, Exira, Anita, and Kimballton, Iowa.
Preceding him in death in addition to his wife June; were his sons: Robert Huff and Richard Huff; and his grandsons: Ronald Huff and James Huff.
Survivors include his son: Donald and wife Lila Huff of Anita, Iowa; his daughter-in-law: Sandy Huff of Houston, Texas; his foster daughters: Debbie Gardner of Harlan, Iowa and Shari Stanley of Las Vegas, Nevada; his grandchildren: Mark and wife Marsha Huff of Kansas City, Missouri, Craig and wife Kathy Huff of Stuart, Iowa, Randy and wife Terri Huff of Exira, Julie and husband Troy Jorgensen of Humboldt, Iowa, Dawn Gardner of Harlan, Deric and wife Robin Gardner of Keller, Texas, and Riannon Conrad of Las Vegas, Nevada; several great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Paul and wife Beverly Heckman of Marshalltown, Iowa, Dean and wife Mary Ann Heckman of Adair, Iowa, Pat Heckman of Sedalia, Missouri, Fred Scarlet of Adair; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Cemetery:
Interment will be in the Exira Cemetery in Exira.
Visitation:
The family will meet with friends Sunday, February 28, 2010 at 4:00 P.M. at the Kessler Funeral Home in Exira.
Service:
Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Lynn Gardner on Monday, March 1, 2010 at 11:00 A.M. at the Kessler Funeral Home in Exira, Iowa.
