Colonel DeWayne Orville Sunderman

Colonel DeWayne O. Sunderman (Bud) of Colorado Springs, CO passed away peacefully at home on October 4, 2023.  Bud was born to Orval and Clara (Sothman) Sunderman on July 17, 1939 in Jacksboro, TX but moved shortly thereafter to Southwest Iowa.  He graduated from Griswold High School in 1957 and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Iowa State University in 1961.

Colonel Sunderman entered active Airforce duty January 2,1962.  He was assigned many different places, his final Airforce assignment was in April, 1984 to headquarters at Space Command, Colorado Springs, CO where he served as Director of Missile Warning Systems, he retired from the Airforce in 1987.

Bud continued to live in Colorado Springs, CO until his passing where he kept very busy.  He opened a tax business around 1990 and continued working until 2022.  Bud also owned a liquor store in Colorado Springs for 7 years.

Bud is survived by his sons Thomas Sunderman, Colorado Springs, CO; Robert Sunderman (Denise) Somers, WI.  He is also survived by his 3 grandchildren, David Sunderman, Max Sunderman and Samantha Diaz and 5 great grandchildren, Vinny Sunderman, Thea Sunderman, Emerie Sunderman, Asher Diaz and Lilianna Diaz.  Siblings: Ken (Sharon) Sunderman, Bella Vista, AR., Barbara Waters, Cumberland, IA., David Sunderman, Bentonville, AR., sister-in-law Sheryl Sunderman, Atlantic, IA., and many other friends and family.

Preceding him in death were son Ronald Sunderman, his parents Orval and Clara Sunderman, brother Dale Sunderman and brother-in-law Jim Waters.

Graveside service with military honors will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 4, 2023, in the Atlantic Cemetery, Field of Glory Section. Following the graveside service, a luncheon visitation will take place in the reception room of the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Atlantic, IA.
