Cora Blunk

C. Maxine Blunk, 87, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Sunday, December 9, 2012, at the Heritage House in Atlantic.


Maxine was born to Charles Dean and Nola Marie (Daughenbaugh) Armstrong on November 18, 1925 and lived her early years on a farm located between Wiota and Anita. She attended school in Wiota, and as a high school student, gained fame as a member of the outstanding girl's basketball team. In 1974 she was inducted into the Iowa Girl's Basketball Hall of Fame, an honor that she always cherished.


In 1948, Maxine married Norman L. Blunk and the couple settled in Atlantic. Maxine worked for many years in banking after graduation from high school, and then, when Norman took a job with Asgrow Seed Company, the couple was transferred to such places as Indiana, Tennessee, Nebraska, Arizona and California. Maxine always willing to pack up, move and adapt to new places, making friends wherever she lived. Eventually, in 1991, the couple decided to return to their roots and moved back to Atlantic in order to be near friends and family.


Maxine was a long time member of the Wiota Methodist Church and volunteered many hours of service to the church. Maxine enjoyed many activities such as golfing, bowling, gardening and crafting. She touched many people with her willingness to always help when she could and she would always take time to write a card or letter to her many friends and family members. She particularly enjoyed spending time with her granddaughters, Marya and Sarah. She will be truly missed by her family.


Maxine is survived by her daughter, Sheryl, and son-in-law, Frederick Vrba, of Flagstaff, Arizona; and her granddaughters, Marya (Jeremie Pichereau) Vrba of Birmingham, England, and Sarah Vrba of Flagstaff, Arizona. In addition she is survived be her sisters Betty Boeck of Fontanelle, IA, Mary Brillhart of Pella, IA and her brother, Bill Armstrong of Atlantic, IA.


A private interment will take place with memorial services to be announced at a later date.
