Daryll L. Peterson, 72, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Sunday morning, March 25, 2007, at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic.
Daryll Lee Peterson was born November 14, 1934, in Atlantic, Iowa, the son of Clarence August and Emilie Anna Gretchen Brehmer Peterson. He was baptized at Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church. He was confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in 1948.
He graduated from the Atlantic High School in 1952.
He worked for Lied Buick and the Swift & Company from 1952-1953. He returned to the farm to work with his father in the spring of 1953. On November 2, 1954, he entered the Army and on October 12, 1956, he returned home. His basic training was in El Paso, Texas. Advanced training was at Ft. Ord, California. In the winter of 1954 he started his tour of duty with the 9th Division in Ulm, Germany. He was a heavy truck MOS besides driving. He played a lot of softball while there. While on duty in Germany, he visited England, the United Kingdom, Sweden and Copenhagen. He was released from the service on Oct. 12, 1956, from Ft. Sheridan, Illinois.
After returning home from the service he started work at the Whitney Bank on December 1, 1956, as well as helping his father on the farm. He retired from the bank on December 31, 1999, after working there for 43 years.
Daryll has been very active in his community in many organizations. He sold tickets for the Atlantic Sports Boosters for wrestling tournaments, basketball and football games and one wrestling meet.
He attended his first football game at the University of Iowa in 1954, prior to joining the service. He has continued to be a Hawkeye fan and I Club member. He was an active softball pitcher, playing with St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Merchants, Griswold, Lyman and Elk Horn.
Daryll enjoyed many sports, playing golf, going to the grandchildren's sporting events, Denver Stock shows, cattle sales, car racing and dancing. He looked forward to 4-H Fair. He enjoyed driving his van and convertible. He liked two kinds of pie - hot and cold. He will be missed.
On January 27, 1957, he was united in marriage to Janice Marilyn Kay at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Atlantic. To this marriage were three children, Cynthia Kay, Tamara Jo (deceased) and Kevin Lee.
Daryll is survived by his wife Janice of 50 years; his daughter, Cynthia Younger and her husband Doug of Kansas City, MO; a son, Kevin Peterson of Atlantic, IA; a son-in-law, Jeff Hetrick of Atlantic; seven grandchildren, Aaron Younger and his fiancé Bonnie, Myles Hetrick, Corey Hetrick and his wife Alicia, Cherese Guyer and Stephanie, Samantha and Brody Peterson; three great-grandchildren, Ashliegh Waltz, Morgan and Aubrey Guyer; his sister, Doris Sothman and her husband Lawrence; his sister-in-law, Phyllis Jean Ehle and her husband Gary; his mother-in-law, Rosell Kay; and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Emilie Peterson; his father-in-law, Clifford Kay; and his daughter, Tamara Hetrick.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, March 30, 2007, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Atlantic with the Reverends Dennis and Sally Meyer officiating. Burial will take place before the service at 10:00 a.m. at the Atlantic Cemetery with Military Graveside rites. An open visitation will be Thursday starting at 9:00 a.m. and continuing until 8:00 p.m. with no specific family hours. The family will gather, following the funeral service, for a lunch and time to share memories in the church fellowship hall.
