David Gregory Hawkins, 53, of Atlantic, Iowa, died Sunday, November 17, 2013, at his home in Atlantic.
He was born July 6, 1960, in Waverly, Missouri, the son of David Hawkins and Nina Turner. Greg grew up in Missouri and attended school in Paris, Missouri. He graduated from Maryville High School with the class of 1978. On May 31, 1986, he was united in marriage to Rhonda Dittmer in Avoca, Iowa.
Greg was a member of the Elk's Lodge and St. Paul's Lutheran Church, both in Atlantic. He served many offices, including Exalted Ruler at the Elk's Lodge. He also served on the church council and was a past president. Greg was active with the church youth groups and Sunday school. He worked for many years at Atlantic Carriers as an over-the-road truck driver and a truck dispatcher. He most recently worked as a truck driver for Precision Haulers in Atlantic for the past six years.
He enjoyed camping, boating, rodeos, tractor pulls, racquetball, skiing, hunting, dancing, playing cards and golf. Greg was also a walking atlas, as he could tell you the directions to anywhere from anywhere at any time. He was a die-hard Chiefs fan. Greg's greatest love was his family and friends.
Greg is survived by his wife, Rhonda of Atlantic; his children, Christopher (Angela) Hawkins of Walnut, IA, Jessica Hawkins of Simpson College, Indianola, IA and Ryan Hawkins of Atlantic, IA; his grandson, Liam Hawkins of Walnut, IA; his mother, Nina (Don) Turner of Maryville, MO; his father, David (JoAnn) Hawkins of Quincy, IL; his brother, Mark (Lynnda) Hawkins of Richmond, MO; parents-in-law, Hugo and Karen Dittmer of Shelby, IA; brothers-in-law, Ralph (Vanessa) Dittmer of Nevada, IA, Harold (Tina) Dittmer of Hawaii and Robert (Kelly) Dittmer of Council Bluffs, IA; sisters-in-law, LaVonne (Khai) Trieu of Overland Park, KS and Deanna Clark of Mt. Vernon, IA; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Marvin and Elsie Bell Hawkins, and Herbert S. and Hazel Stanton.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, November 22, 2013, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Atlantic, Iowa.
Visitation with family present will be from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m., Thursday, November 21, 2013, also at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Atlantic, IA.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to the family to be used per Greg's wishes.
Hockenberry Family Care Funeral Home in Atlantic, Iowa, is in charge of the arrangements.
