Dean Lewis

Dean Elias Lewis passed away January 24, 2010, at the Cass County Memorial Hospital. Dean was born August 16, 1914, in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Harley Leroy and Susan Ann (Hughes) Lewis.

In his younger years, he drove an ambulance for the University of Iowa and worked as a Driver's License Examiner prior to serving in World War II. He served in France and Germany and was awarded the Bronze Star for his service to his country.

Upon returning from the war, he became interested in public safety and in 1946 became an Iowa State Trooper. He served in that capacity throughout the state of Iowa. He retired in 1971 as Captain for District 3 and 4.

He was married to Leona Mae (Howell) on November 16, 1947, in Iowa City. They moved many times in his years of service to the state and in 1965 settled in Atlantic, Iowa, where he was the area commander for the Iowa State Patrol.

Dean loved to golf and along with his son, Steve, raised Quarter horses. He was a devoted father, husband and grandfather.

He is survived by his son, Steven Lewis and his wife, Sharon of Walnut, Iowa; a daughter, Jackie Schneider and her husband, Ron of Iowa City, Iowa. He is also survived by six grandchildren; Matthew (Carissa) of Remsen, Iowa, Amanda (Tim) of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Jeffrey (Heather) of Ankeny, Iowa, Jason, (Cali) of Ankeny, Iowa, Kipp and Jill Schneider of Iowa City, Iowa; and a step grandson, Clayton Guffey of Phoenix, Arizona. He is also survived by 7 great grandchildren; Kirsten, Draeden, and Kahra Lewis of Remsen, Iowa; Evan Applegate of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Mahree and Brynlee Lewis of Ankeny, Iowa; and a step great grandchild, Aryana Robinson of Ankeny, Iowa; sister-in-law Lotta Mae Lewis of Mendota, Illinois; and also several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leroy and Susan Ann; his wife, Lee; and a brother, George Edward (Ted) Lewis.

A memorial service will be held at the Atlantic United Church of Christ on Wednesday, January 27, 2010, at 10:30 a.m.
