Delbert Hobbs

Delbert Dayle Hobbs, 94, of Atlantic, Iowa, and formerly of Anita, Iowa, entered into rest Friday, April 3, 2015, at the Heritage House in Atlantic, Iowa.

Delbert was born November 2, 1920, in Lincoln, Kansas, to Leonard and Elsie (Cook) Hobbs. He attended country school through his entire grade school years, and then attended Lincoln High School in Lincoln, Kansas, graduating with the class of 1941. During his high school years, Delbert was active in basketball and football and won nine athletic letters and several medals in track. He attended a national defense school on aircraft construction in Wichita, Kansas, before joining the United States Navy on December 31, 1941. He was honorably discharged from the United States Navy on January 19, 1946. During his service years he met and married Mabel Highley on June 11, 1944, in Coeur d' Alene, Idaho.

Delbert was a farmer all his life. He helped his parents with the family farm when he was a child. Upon returning from the navy, he and Mabel moved to Mabel's family farm south of Anita, Iowa. Delbert and Mabel lived in Anita for 62 years before moving to the Heritage House in Atlantic, Iowa, during their retirement. Delbert enjoyed farming and helping Mabel with her gardening. However, the most important thing to Delbert was Mabel and his family.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mable; his parents; three brothers, Floyd (infant), Orval and his wife Edna, and Clarence.

He is survived by his daughter, Carol and husband, Jerald Hanson of Yorkville, Illinois; his grandchildren, Jennifer Gonnella of San Jose, CA and Eric Hanson of Yorkville, IL; his great-grandchildren, Alex Hanson of Yorkville, IL, Gianna, Casey and Genevieve Gonnella all of San Jose, CA; sister-in-law, Anna Hobbs of Cedar Falls, IA; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, April 8, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at the Hockenberry Family Care Funeral Home in Atlantic, Iowa, with private family burial in Evergreen Cemetery in Anita, IA.

Following the memorial service, a time of fellowship and lunch with the family will be held in the community room at Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic, Iowa.
