Dewey Ohms

Dewey Nicholas Ohms, 87, of Anita, Iowa, passed away Friday, March 1, 2013, at the Caring Acres Nursing Home in Anita, Iowa.

He was born September 22, 1925, to Hans and Teressa (Sorensen) Ohms at the Prairie Rose State Park in Shelby County, Iowa. He was raised in the Harlan, Defiance and Elk Horn areas and attended rural schools. Dewey graduated from Elk Horn High School with the class of 1943. He served in the U.S. Navy Air Corps V-12 program and the United States Merchant Marines during World War II and was proud to have been on a liberty ship, the USS Park Victory, during the Battle of Okinawa. Dewey later attended and obtained his bachelor's degree from Iowa State University. While attending college he met and was united in marriage to Marilyn Gibson. After college they moved to Adel and later to Washington, Iowa, where Dewey worked for Farmer's National. In 1952, Dewey and Marilyn moved to Anita. At that time Dewey began farming and continued farming until he retired in 2003.

Dewey was a member of the United Methodist Church in Anita since 1952. He was also a member of the Delta Ki Fraternity at Iowa State, Anita VFW, and was a 32nd Degree Free Mason member for over 50 years. Dewey also served on the Anita school board and many 4-H Extension committees. In 1957 he was named Cass County Outstanding Young Farmer

One of his most memorable trips with his children was fishing in northern Canada with family friends. Dewey loved his family and had many short trips with his children. He had fond memories of their trip to Connecticut and New York to visit Nancy and Mark. He also enjoyed traveling to visit son Bruce at ports in Washington, California and Pearl Harbor. He enjoyed fishing at his farm pond with his cousin Lawrence and Pauline. His greatest passions were his family, farming and ISU.

Dewey is survived by his wife, Marilyn of Anita, IA; his children, Linda (Ed) Heaton of Urbandale, IA, Nancy Brown of Anita, Bruce Ohms of Anita, Gary (Lori) Ohms of Anita, and Tina (Mark) Steffens of Solon, IA; his grandchildren, Sandra (Mark) Cullen of Carroll, IA, Sara (Shawn) Maas of Anita, Jennie (Kleven) Bingham of Anita, Jessie (Brian) Meyer of Anita, Josh (Samantha) Brown of Anita, Nathan (Katie) Ohms of Montevideo, MN, Matthew (Carrie) Ohms of Anita, Travis (Chabree) Ohms of Davenport, IA, Nicole Ohms of Anita, and Ryan (Michelle) Steffens of Cedar Rapids, IA; his great-grandchildren, Nick and Morgan Cullen of Carroll, Cale Maas of Anita, Karsten and Kayleigh Bingham of Anita, Kennedy Meyer of Anita, Chloe Ohms of Montevideo and Leah and Eden Ohms of Anita; his siblings, Dean Ohms of East Troy, WI, Jack (Lois) Ohms of Palo Alto, CA, Glenn (Joan) Ohms of Brayton, IA, Greta (Wayne) Ullrich of Atlantic, Marie Miller of Coin, IA, Max (Ann) Ohms of Eddyville, IA, and Nicky (Dick) Stevens of Omaha, NE; many other relatives and friends.

Preceding Dewey in death were his parents, Hans and Teressa Ohms; his brother, Marvin Ohms; his son-in-law, Mark Brown; his sister-in-law, Irene Ohms; his brothers-in-law, Maurice Miller and Clinton Gibson; also nieces, Denise Ohms and Darcy Imig; and nephew, Marlin Miller.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, March 4, 2013, at United Methodist Church in Anita, Iowa.

Visitation with family present will be from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m., Sunday, March 3, 2013, at Hockenberry Family Care Funeral Home in Anita, IA.

Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Anita, Iowa.
