Donald A. Akers, age 74, of Exira, IA, passed away on Saturday, December 07, 2024, at his home in Exira.
Donald Alvie Akers was born at the Audubon County Memorial Hospital on February 16, 1950, a son of Frank and Elsie (Klemish) Akers. Don grew up in Audubon County his entire life. He attended Exira Community Schools graduating with the class of 1968. On July 23, 1972, he was united in marriage to Becky Johnson. To this union, four children were born, Holly, Brandon, Heidi, and Daniel.
Don worked many jobs in the Audubon County area, starting with Exira Farm Supply to Larsen Ford in Exira, and Quality Machine in Audubon. Don worked up until his retirement in 2015. Don also was on the Exira Fire Department for 13 years and the Exira City Council for 8 years. During his retirement, he always had to stay busy, he loved to work on his old John Deere Mowers and old cars. Don also enjoyed Elvis Presley, where he collected many memorabilia. Don was recently fortunate where his grandson Cole personally flew him to Graceland in Memphis, TN, to achieve a bucket list item and make a precious memory.
Those who preceded Don in death are his parents, Frank and Elsie Akers; his-in-laws Swede and Carol Johnson; brothers-in-law, Brian (Swede) Johnson and Bradley Johnson; and sister-in-law Linda Akers.
Don is survived by his wife Becky Akers; children, Holly (Eddie) Madsen, Brandon (Shelbie) Akers, Heidi (Paul) May, and Daniel (Amanda) Akers; grandchildren, Kennedy (Derek) Cook, Cole Madsen his fiancée Sadie Schultes, Alexis Madsen, Caden Akers, Evan Akers, Greyson Akers, Axlie Akers, Tatum May, Adysen Pingel, Parker Pingel, Paisley Akers; and one great-grandchild, Josette Cook; siblings, Alice Jean and Norman Nielsen and their families, Gary Akers and his families, JoAnn and Jim Mellor and their families, Bob and Judy Burkhardt and their families, Peggy and Bill Grimes and their families, Sherry Fenske and her family, Bruce and Lermes Johnson and their families.
Don's funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 13, 2024, at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Exira, IA, with Pastor Alan Seehusen officiating. Following his funeral service, a luncheon will be held at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church Parish Center in Exira. Interment will be held at a later date in Exira Cemetery.
Visitation with the family will be held one hour before the funeral at the funeral home on Friday.
