Donald Franklin Toft, the son of Thomas and Esther Petersen Toft, was born October 4, 1930 at his parents’ home in Oakfield Township, Audubon County, Iowa and died December 26, 2011 at the Exira Care Center in Exira, Iowa at the age of 81 years, 2 months, and 22 days. Don was baptized and confirmed at the Exira Lutheran Church in Exira. He attended rural school near Brayton, Iowa and then graduated from the Exira High School with the Class of 1949. Don then was employed with Eagen Construction in Exira. On February 4, 1952 he enlisted in the United States Army. During his tour of duty he served in Korea with the 84th Engineer Construction Battlion. On October 5, 1953 he was united in marriage to Donna Lou Voss at St. John’s Lutheran Church east of Exira, Iowa. Don was honorably discharged on November 5, 1953 and returned to Exira. Don again was employed at Eagen Construction and also farmed with his father-in-law Carl Voss east of Exira. They milked cows for many years and also grew row crops. Don retired then enjoyed woodworking and playing cards. He and Donna enjoyed traveling especially to visit Army buddies. Donna died April 26, 2008. Don lived on the farm for a short time then moved to the Friendship Village in Audubon. In April of 2010 he then moved to the Exira Care Center. Don was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church east of Exira. He was a member of the American Legion in Adair and also the American Legion in Exira. Preceding him in death were his wife Donna Lou Toft; his parents; his brother Kenneth and wife Lola Toft; his father-in-law and mother-in-law Carl and Lola Voss. Survivors include his children: Randy and wife Becky Toft of Carroll, Iowa; Londa and husband Bill Haukap of Lake View, Iowa; Scott Toft and Yvonne Dennis of Atlantic, Iowa; his ten grandchildren: Steffanie and husband Mark Honeck of Phoenix, Arizona; Angie Dern of Carroll, Iowa; Vicki and husband Eric Hahn of Carroll, Iowa; Trevor and wife Heather Toft of Arcadia, Iowa; Tom and wife Katie Haukap of Carroll, Iowa; Kreg Haukap of Storm Lake, Iowa; Adam Haukap of Lake View, Iowa; Brandon Toft and fiancee Heather of Audubon, Iowa; Tara and husband James Klocke of Dedham, Iowa; Elizabeth Toft of Atlantic, Iowa; his ten great grandchildren: Marcus Honeck, Julia Honeck, Treva Hahn, Tahlia Hahn, Kylie Humlicek, Weston Toft, Emmitt Toft, Emma Klocke, Hannah Klocke, Fletcher Toft; his brother Marvin and wife Shari Toft of Carroll, Iowa; his sister-in-law Doreen and husband Bill Swanson of Ankeny, Iowa; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Cemetery:
Interment will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery east of Exira, Iowa.
Visitation:
The family will meet with friends Wednesday evening at 6:00 P.M. at the Kessler Funeral Home in Exira, Iowa.
Service:
Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Timothy Fitzner on Thursday, December 29, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. at the St. John’s Lutheran Church east of Exira, Iowa.
