Donald Jensen

Donald L. Jensen, 82, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Thursday, August 2, 2018, at his home in Atlantic, Iowa.

Don was born May 25, 1936 in Atlantic, Iowa, to Alfred C. and Ada P. (Herbert) Jensen. He attended school in Atlantic and graduated from the Atlantic High School in 1954.

He married Marcella Jean Kay on November 27, 1955. After the death of Marcella in 2010, he married Sharon McDermott in May of 2011. Don was a member of the Wiota United Methodist Church.

Don farmed in Cass County and was a resident of the Atlantic area all of his life. He loved raising corn, feeding cattle, and driving his semi. He always had a positive outlook for agriculture and promoted the young farmer. He was a great supporter of 4-H and FFA. He was a past member of the Board of Directors of the National Livestock and Meat Board, a Master Pork Producer, an inductee into the Cass County Beef Producers Hall of Fame, and a longtime member of Farm Bureau and several producer associations on all levels.

When he was younger, Don sang in a Barber Shop Quartet and participated in Toastmasters. He enjoyed eating out, dancing, and traveling to the music shows in Branson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marcella; and a son, Bryan.

Don is survived by his wife, Sharon of Atlantic, IA; daughters, Jonelle (Chuck) Ruffing of Atlantic, IA, Peggy (Craig) Medvec of Naperville, IL, and Marcy Jensen (Joy Chivers) of Lewis Center, OH; grandchildren, Jennifer (Don) Slagle, Javen (Kathy) Smith, Kristen Medvec (Kyle Hammann, fiancé), and Katie (Mike) Klamo; great-grandchildren, Will and Anna Slagle, Natalie, Montgomery, Creighton, and Lincoln Smith; step children, Debbie (Glen) Sonntag of Atlantic, IA, Mike (Melanie) McDermott of Atlantic, IA, Dan (Lisa) McDermott of Fountain Hills, AZ, Rex McDermott and special friend Lisa of Atlantic IA, and Amy (Neil) Elmquist of Audubon, IA; step grandchildren and step great-grandchildren.

Visitation with family will be from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m., Sunday, August 5, 2018, at Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, August 6, 2018, at the Cass County Community Center in Atlantic, Iowa. Interment will be in the Atlantic Cemetery in Atlantic, Iowa.

Memorials may be made to family’s wishes to be determined at a later date.
