Donald Mehlmann

Donald W. Mehlmann, 86, of Anita, Iowa, passed away on Friday, February 2, 2007, at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, Iowa.
Donald William Mehlmann was born on July 18, 1920, in Cass County, Iowa, the son of John William and Leah Belle (Watson) Mehlmann.
Don lived in the Anita Area all of his life and graduated from Anita High School in 1938.
On January 16, 1943, he was married to Shirley Rasmussen in Grant City, Missouri. Don and Shirley operated the Lil Red Barn near Anita. After Shirley's passing in 1991, Don still operated the business selling records and square dance apparel until the present. The Lil Red Barn has been in business for over 40 years. They also taught square dancing lessons in the Anita area, as well as in Des Moines. He and Shirley were members of Round and Square Dance Clubs in Iowa for 35 years.
Along with owning and operating the Lil Red Barn, Don was a farmer and worked for Moorman Feed Company until retiring in 1982.
He was a member of the Congregational Church of Christ in Anita where he served as board president for many years. Don was on the Southwest 8 Senior Services Policy Board and delivered Meals On Wheels. He received an award for Volunteering from Governor Terry Bransted.
Don is survived by sons, Jerry Mehlmann and his wife, Sandy of Las Vegas, Nevada and Michael Mehlmann and his wife, Rose Marie of Anita, Iowa; daughters, Margaret Mehlmann of Indianola, Iowa, and Melissa Johnson and her husband, Michael of Lincoln, Nebraska; grandchildren, William Goodman and his wife, Johanna of Killeen, Texas, Robert Goodman of Anita, Iowa, Molly Johnson of Lakewood, Colorado, Paul Johnson and his wife, Leah of Manhattan, Kansas, Jon Mehlmann and his wife, Amy of O'Fallon, Missouri, Lisa Garrison and her husband, Rick of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Laurie Mehlmann of Las Vegas, Nevada; great grandchildren, Tyler Mehlmann and Daniel Garrison of Las Vegas, Nevada, Natalia and Kayley Goodman of Killeen, Texas, and Ethan Mehlmann of O'Fallon, Missouri.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Shirley; his parents; and infant son, Jon Michael Mehlmann.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, February 5, 2007, at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Anita, Iowa.
Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Anita.
Visitation will be from 1:00 - 5:00 p.m., on Sunday, Feb. 4, 2007, with the family present to greet friends from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m., at the Hockenberry Family Care Funeral Home in Anita.
