Donald Dean Sanny, 75, a life long resident of Cass County passed away Saturday, April 24, 2010, at the Atlantic Nursing Rehab Center.
Don was born January 15, 1935, to John Henry and Mary Esther (Ryan) Sanny in Atlantic, Iowa. He resided outside of and attended school at Lewis, Iowa.
He was briefly in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1954 and was honorably discharged for medical reasons.
He helped on the family farm just outside of Lewis and also did some construction work on the "brand new" Interstate 80 back in the 50s. His work on I-80 is what led to a 40+ year career as a truck driver. After his retirement from Walnut Grove/Cargil, he served as Mayor of the City of Lewis for 8+ years.
On February 10, 1957, he was married to Sharlene Bannick at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church south of Wiota, Iowa.
Don's favorite hobby was flying. He was an excellent mechanic and loved working on the engines of cars. He was an avid NASCAR fan watching the races every chance he could.
Don is survived by his wife, Sharlene Sanny of Atlantic Nursing & Rehab; his 4 children, Jody Allumbaugh and her husband, Greg of Lewis, Iowa, Greg Sanny and his wife, Kathy of Gravette, Arkansas, Cindy Sanny of Griswold, Iowa, and Angie Carlton and her husband, Mark of Griswold, Iowa; three grandchildren, Emma Allumbaugh, and Ryan and McKenna Carlton; six step-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; his sister, Corrine Anderson and her husband, Lyle of Bella Vista, Arkansas; sisters-in-law, Betty Sanny of Lewis, Iowa, Colleen Sanny of Fremont, Nebraska, Dorothe Sanny of St. Paul, Minnesota, and Fran Bannick of Omaha, Nebraska; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Preceding Don in death were his parents, John and Mary Sanny; his son, Jeffery Dean; his brothers and sisters, Henry, Lee, Earl, Merle, Lois, Dora, Agnes and Lila June; his parents-in-law, Floyd and Hazel Bannick; his brother-in-law, Gary Bannick; and his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Gloria and Dean Butler.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, April 28, 2010, at Hockenberry Family Care Funeral Home in Atlantic, Iowa.
Visitation with family will be Tuesday, April 27th from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. also at Hockenberry Funeral Home in Atlantic.
Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 28, 2010, in the Oakwood Cemetery in Lewis, Iowa.
