Donna Mae Karwal

Mrs. Donna Mae Karwal, age 88, of Atlantic, IA, passed away on Saturday, April, 19, 2025, at the Heritage House in Atlantic, IA.

Donna was born in Atlantic, daughter of John and Erma (Petersen) Paulsen. She attended Atlantic Schools, graduating from Atlantic High School with the class of 1955. On June 24, 1956, at Zion Lutheran Church in Atlantic, she was united in marriage to William K. Karwal. Two children were born to this union: Debra and Mark.

Throughout her professional career, Donna was employed at JC Penney for a duration of 19 years, during which she exemplified women's fashion and design throughout her life. She consistently presented herself with poise and style. Aside from her self image, she was a caring mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Donna loved cooking and baking; she gained a reputation for her amazing Christmas cookies, gardening, and canning, where she crafted delicious salsa. Donna was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Atlantic. She was also a dedicated D.O.E.S. member, faithfully devoting herself to many officer roles and attending conventions. Donna was often involved with the Hospital Auxiliary, Red Hats, and the Friends of the Library in Atlantic.

Donna is survived by her children: Debra (Bryan) Williams of Aledo, TX, and Dr. Mark (Laura) Karwal of Iowa City, IA; five grandchildren: Christopher Williams, Amanda Williams, Calley Williams, Lucas Karwal, and Matthew Karwal; three great-grandchildren: Margaret, Benjamin, and Anna; a brother, Donald Paulsen of Kimballton; and cousins Don Matthews and Bob Matthews.

Donna's death was preceded by her husband Bill; her parents John and Erma Paulsen; and her brothers Gene Paulsen, Norman Paulsen, and Donald Paulsen.

Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church with Rev. Lauri Boysen officiating the service. Luncheon will be held following the funeral in the church's Fellowship Hall. Private burial will be held at Atlantic Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to "The Bridge Fund at Heritage House" in memory of Donna for the wonderful care she received from them. They may be mailed to Schmidt Family Funeral Home, P.O. Box 523, Atlantic, IA 50022.
