Doris Darlene Schlater

Doris Darlene Schlater, the daughter of Peter and Laura (Tibben) Schwab, was born September 19, 1927, at her parents’ home in Audubon County, south of Brayton, Iowa and died April 24, 2014, at the Exira Care Center in Exira, Iowa at the age of 86 years, 7 months, and 5 days. She attended rural school near Brayton, Iowa. Doris then was employed at the grocery store in Brayton. On May 2, 1947, she was united in marriage to Marvin “Toot” Schlater in Troy, Kansas. Four children: Darlene, Donald, Denise and David were born to this union. They lived on and operated Marvin’s family farm. They raised livestock and grew row crops for many years. Doris raised chickens and enjoyed her vegetable and flower gardens. In September of 1978, they moved into Exira. Marvin “Toot” died August 25, 1991. Doris lived in her home then later moved to the Exira Care Center in January of 2014. Doris attended the Exira Christian Church in Exira. She enjoyed gardening especially raising flowers. She was a wonderful homemaker and took pride in an always impeccably clean home and yard. She enjoyed canning her fruits and vegetables. Doris loved to play cards and enjoyed playing Pitch, Gin, and Pinochle. She always enjoyed having coffee uptown with her friends. Doris is preceded in death by her husband Marvin “Toot” Schlater; her parents; her brothers: Floyd Schwab, Marvin (Jack) Schwab, her sisters: Beulah Paulsen, Florence and Emmert Lauridsen, Lois and Merne Riesgaard, her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Grover and Alleene Schlater, Richard and Norma Schlater; Donavon Nelson, and Leslie Vorm. Survivors include her children: Darlene Jensen of Keller, Texas; Donald and wife Ranae Schlater of Exira, Iowa; Denise Schlater of Kimballton, Iowa; David and wife Cindie Schlater of Exira; her grandchildren: Traci and husband Wade Synder and their son John “Jack” all of Hinesburg, Vermont; Terri and husband Nathan Radcliffe and their children Kaelyn and Hannah all of Trophy Club, Texas; Nathan and wife Amanda Berg and their children Zane and Isabelle of Atlantic, Iowa; Drew Christensen of West Des Moines, Iowa; her brother-in-law Emmert Paulsen of Exira; her sisters-in-law: Phyllis Schwab, Lois Nelson, and Lorene Vorm all of Atlantic; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Cemetery:
Interment will be in the Exira Cemetery in Exira, Iowa.

Visitation:
The family will meet friends Sunday afternoon at 4:00 P.M. at the Kessler Funeral Home in Exira.

Service:
Funeral services will be Monday, April 28, 2014, at 10:30 A.M. at the Exira Christian Church in Exira, Iowa.
