Doris Jean Ditto, the youngest daughter of nine children of Bryan and Pauline Spunaugle Powell, was born January 20, 1941, in Coffeyville, Kansas and died March 23, 2014, at the Audubon County Memorial Hospital in Audubon, Iowa at the age of 73 years, 2 months, and 3 days. Doris was baptized and confirmed at the Nazarene Church in Cherryvale, Kansas. She attended Grant County Rural Schools then graduated from the Cherryvale High School with the Class of 1959. Doris moved to Coon Rapids, Iowa with her sister Dola. Doris was employed in the office of Garst and Thomas Seed Corn Company for years. During this time she met her future husband Floyd. On April 23, 1962, she was united in marriage to Floyd Ditto at the Nazarene Church in Independence, Kansas. Two daughters: Dalena and Denise were born to this union. Doris started selling Lyceum Programs for International Lectures in Missouri, Iowa, Illinois, and Minnesota. Also Doris traveled with Floyd who was giving school programs on the History of Folk Music throughout North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Illinois, Ohio, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, and Texas. Doris also participated in the “Old Four Eyes” pageant in Medora, North Dakota. They settled on their farm in the early 1970’s. From 1979 to 1998, Doris sold newspaper advertising for the local newspaper. Then in 1990 she started selling specialty advertising, developing her own business in 2000 known as Ditto Advertising which she has continued to operate. Doris was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Audubon and served as a Deacon and an Elder. She was a member of the R & R Ladies Club for over 20 years. Doris and Floyd enjoyed square dancing and traveling around the country. Anyone who met Doris quickly found out she was blessed with the gift of gab… no one was a stranger for long. Doris adored the color ‘red’ and was seen frequently in bright red blouses or sweaters at many community events. She loved to sew, tend to her gardens and keep a tidy home. Doris was also an outstanding cook and enjoyed entertaining family/friends at her dining room table during holidays and Sunday dinners. One of her favorite recipes was baking wonderful apple pies freshly picked from the 50+ year old family apple trees.
