Doris Scarlett

August 4, 1923 — September 19, 2017

Doris Pearl Scarlett, 94, of Anita, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, September 19, 2017, at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, Iowa.

She was born August 4, 1923, in Anita, the daughter of Roy and Hazel (Gissible) Scholl. Doris was raised in the country, south of Anita, and attended Anita schools, graduating from Anita High School with the class of 1941. She also received Normal Training to teach and then taught school in a one room school house at Lincoln Center.

Doris was united in marriage to George W. Scarlett on October 4, 1942. She stopped teaching and began working on the farm alongside her husband. Doris spent her entire adult life working alongside George and was truly a farmer and a farmer’s wife in every sense of the word. She was very proud of the livestock they raised, including Goldie the horse, and Dolly their special sheltie collie dog, and her many cats, especially the white ones. In addition to the livestock, they also had row crops of corn, beans and an abundance of hay with their International tractors and Gleaner Combines. On April 8, 1999, a tornado took the farm, out buildings, home, and all of the homestead.

Doris used “just right” eggs to make sure she made the lightest angel food cakes possible, which she always brought to her nieces and nephews birthday parties. George and Doris always took pride in their well-kept homestead.

She was a member of Highland Methodist Church (now defunct) and a 50 plus year member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Hazel Scholl; her husband, George Scarlett on December 23, 2002; her son, Darrell Roy Scarlett in 1962; brother, Edwin (Ruby) Scholl; and sister, Hilda (Boyd) Falconer.

Doris is survived by her caretaker and niece, Judi Rumple of Anita, IA; her sister, Rosalie (Gene) Kopp of Anita, IA; brother, Harold (Phyllis) Scholl of Adair, IA; several nieces, nephews and friends, including her new friends she made while living at Caring Acres in Anita for the last two years.

A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, September 21, 2017, at Evergreen Cemetery in Anita, Iowa.

A gathering with refreshments will be held at the Weather Vane Café in Anita following the graveside service.

Hockenberry Family Care in Anita, Iowa, is in charge of the arrangements.
