Dorothy Catherine Cheslick, 98, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, August 5, 2015, at the Heritage House in Atlantic, IA.
She was born June 13, 1917, in Woodside, Long Island, New York, the daughter of Sylvester and Dora Martinka. Dorothy attended schools in the Long Island area and graduated from Bryant High School in Long Island City, New York.
On September 27, 1941, Dorothy was united in marriage to Milton Cheslick at the St. Andrew Episcopal Church in Astoria, New York. Shortly after graduating from high school, Dorothy started working for the Equitable Life Insurance Company in Long Island. She spent most of her working years with Equitable and a few years at Abraham & Strauss in Long Island before Milton and Dorothy retired to Naples, Florida, in 1977. Milton passed away June 20, 1980.
Dorothy was a member of the Episcopal Church St. Monica's in Naples and active with the Episcopal Church Women. She enjoyed volunteering with the local election board in Naples. In her younger years Dorothy loved to ski, ice skate, horseback ride and swim. Later in life, during her free time, Dorothy enjoyed many types of needlework, crocheting, knitting, cross stitch, needle point and quilting. She was fond of gardening, however, her greatest passion was baking and cooking. Dorothy loved to bake and had the best pound cake ever.
As age creeped up on Dorothy, she felt the urge to be near her family. Dorothy then moved to the Heritage House in Atlantic, Iowa, in 2008 to be close to her daughter and some of her grandchildren.
Dorothy is survived by her son, John (Donna) Cheslick of Los Angeles, CA; her daughter, Dorothea (Mark) Kyhnn of Atlantic, IA; her grandchildren, Ashley Wilson of McKinney, TX, Matthew Kyhnn of Queenstown, New Zealand, Sierra Cheslick and Katelyn Cheslick both of Los Angeles, CA; her great-grandchild, Corbin Wilson of McKinney, TX; other relatives and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Sylvester and Dora Martinka; her husband, Milton; and her two sisters, Ruth Gregory and Ethel Sharkey.
A celebration of life gathering will take place at 2:00 p.m., September 18, 2015, at the Heritage House in Atlantic, IA.
Dorothy once said "No sadness, God has been good to me," and in accordance with her and her family's wishes, cremation has taken place and her family will have a private interment of cremains at a later date.
