Dorothy Schroder

Dorothy Pearl Schroder, 83, of Griswold, Iowa and formerly of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Sunday, June 29, 2014, at the Griswold Care Center in Griswold.


She was born February 23, 1931 in Oconto, Nebraska, the daughter of Joseph and Pearl (McCrickard) Newhouse. Her family later moved to Missouri Valley, Iowa where she was raised and attended school through high school. On May 6, 1947, she was united in marriage to David Ernest Schroder. They remained in Missouri Valley for a few years and since David was in construction work, they spent many years traveling between Arizona, Washington and Iowa.


Dorothy was a homemaker to her children and family. She was a great cook and through all their traveling she also worked outside the home for many years in the food service industry.


She enjoyed playing cards and doing various crafts for many years. Dorothy was a very caring and sympathetic person. She was a friend and listener to anyone she knew. Most importantly, Dorothy was a devoted, loving wife and mother and she loved to spend time with her family.


Dorothy is survived by her children, Dave (Suze) Schroder of Phoenix, AZ, Wes Schroder of Treynor, IA, Denise (Dave) Pilcher of Ankeny, IA, Renee (Jim) Albright of Treynor, IA, Kitty (John) Koontz of Kiron, IA, Robin (Donald) Waters of Cumberland, IA and Sharon (Jim) Griggs of Papillion, NE; 17 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; siblings, Pauline (Ron) Skelton, Lloyd J Newhouse all of Washington and Judy (Daryle) Steinkuehler of Council Bluffs, IA; other relatives and friends.


She was preceded in death by her husband, David Schroder; her parents, Joseph and Pearl Newhouse; her son, Blaine Schroder, her daughter-in-law, Rena Schroder, her sister, Joyce (Booker) Hawes and her sister-in-law, Alice Newhouse.


There will be a gathering of family and friends from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m., Saturday, July 5, 2014, at the Griswold Community Center.


Memorials to the family will be designated per Dorothy's wishes at a later date.
