Dorothy I. Smith, 98, of Exira, Iowa, passed away Saturday, April 19, 2008, at the Exira Care Center in Exira.

Dorothy Irene Hammontree was born on May 15, 1909, in Sheridan, Wyoming, the daughter of Andrew Ray and Beulah (Townsend) Hammontree.

On March 6, 1926, she was united in marriage to Theodore Smith in Sheridan, Wyoming. In 1928, they moved to Idaho, where she helped raise poultry and produce to sell. The family then moved back to Wyoming and later decided to move into Montana. In 1963, the family settled to Iowa to help start a ranch; where she worked as a cook for the ranch hands.

Dorothy and Ted were members of the Elks Lodge in Wyoming and the Anita Saddle Club.

She enjoyed relaxing and spending time with her family. Dorothy could often be found watching episodes of Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. She loved kids.

Dorothy is survived by her daughters, Solina Ann Kreman and her husband, George of St. Helens, Oregon, and Wanda Sampson of Exira, Iowa; eight grandchildren, Bill Simon and his fiancé, Cindy of Anita, Iowa, Bob Simon and his wife, Amanda of Exira, Iowa, Bill, Tom and Sharon Kreman, of St. Helens, Oregon, Peggy Kreman of Scappoose, Oregon, Karen Russell and her husband, Rich and Janiece Hartman and her husband, Nick all of St. Helens, Oregon; six great-grandchildren, Kevin Simon of Carroll, Iowa, Grace VanAerman of Atlantic, Iowa, Devon Russell of St. Helens, Oregon, Morgan Langley of Seattle, Washington, and Damian and Shaunell Hartman of St. Helens, Oregon; and adopted grandchildren, Issac and Amanda Kommes and their children, Cody and Derick.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Andrew and Beulah Hammontree; her husband, Ted Smith; her children, Archie, Ray, Virginia and Betty; her brother, Ray Hammontree; her sisters and brothers-in-law, Ruth Phillips and her husband, Carl, and Evelyn Norton and her husband, Albert; her parents-in-law, Bill and Margaret Smith; and sons-in-law, Bill Simon and Alan Sampson.

Funeral services will be during the visitation at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 22, 2008, at the Hockenberry Funeral Home in Anita.

A private burial will be held at the Evergreen Cemetery in Anita, Iowa.

Visitation will be from 12:00 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday at the Hockenberry Funeral Home in Anita, with the family present to greet friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Memorials may be made to Cass County Memorial Hospital Hospice.
