Dr. Harold Thomas Barnes, D.C.

Dr. Harold Thomas Barnes, D.C., the son of Emery Glendon and Clara Margaret (Flack) Barnes, was born April 28, 1929, on his parents’ homestead north of Jefferson, Iowa and died August 23, 2013, at the Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa at the age of 84 years, 3 months, and 25 days. Tom was baptized at the First Christian Church in Jefferson, Iowa. He attended Jefferson Community Schools graduating with the High School Class of 1946. Tom then helped operate the family farm. On June 25, 1950, he was united in marriage to Bernice Vincent at the Baptist Church in Churdan, Iowa. Four children Jacquelyn, Dwight, Stewart, and Lynnette were born to this union. He continued to farm until he was forced to retire from farming due to a back injury. Tom attended Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa receiving his degree in 1957. He then moved his family to Audubon, Iowa where he had purchased a Chiropractic practice. “Doc” operated his practice until he sold it and retired in 2000. During his free time he enjoyed traveling, “working” on his computer, and going to high school football games, in fact he served as the Audubon football team doctor for many years. “Doc” Barnes was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Audubon, Iowa where he had served as an Elder and a Deacon. He served on the Audubon Community School Board and was the President during the time the “new” high school was being built. “Doc” served two terms as the Mayor of Audubon and had been the president of the Audubon Chamber of Commerce. He was the chairperson for both the centennial and quasquicentennial celebrations and was a member of many civic organizations. He was a member of the Odd Fellow Lodge and had served as the State Treasurer and was a member of the board of the IOOF Home and Community Therapy Center. “Doc” Barnes was a member of the President Club at Palmer College and was a member of several chiropractic organizations. He was an exceptional volunteer giving freely of his time and talents to help better the lives of all those living in and around the Audubon community. Preceding him in death were his parents; his brothers and sisters Delmar Barnes, Yvonne Karcher, Darwin Barnes, Rolland Barnes, and Betty Elliott; his father-in-law and mother-in-law Arthur and Dorothy Vincent; and his son-in-law Anthony York. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Bernice Barnes of Audubon, Iowa; his children Jacquelyn King of Ames, Iowa, Dwight Barnes and wife Nancy Rossley-Barnes of Iowa City, Iowa, Stewart and wife Angela Barnes of Des Moines, Iowa, and Lynnette and husband Bill Irlmeier of Woodland, California; his grandchildren Sean King, Kevin King, Michael Ward, Zaakary Barnes, and Rachal Barnes; his step-grandchildren Derek Irlmeier, Drew Irlmeier, Jay Roling, and Jesse Roling; 8 great grandchildren; his brother-in-law Harold and wife Ida Vincent of Tucson, Arizona; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Cemetery:
Interment will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Audubon, Iowa.

Visitation:
The family will meet with friends on Monday evening, August 26, 2013, at 6:00 P.M. at the Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon, Iowa

Service:
Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Roger Claxton on Tuesday, August 27, 2013, at 2:00 P.M. at the First Presbyterian Church in Audubon, Iowa.
