Edgar Hemphill

Edgar Ray Hemphill, 95, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Friday, April 13, 2018, at Heritage House in Atlantic.

He was born January 31, 1923, to Elmer and Fannie (DeLozier) Hemphill near Osceola, Missouri. His family moved to Griswold, Iowa, in 1935. He was married to Meta Green on February 10, 1945, in Omaha, NE. They are the parents of four children, three sons and one daughter.

Edgar and Meta farmed in the Griswold and Elliott area until 1988. They also owned and operated the Arlington Hotel in Griswold for many years. He was employed at the Griswold Care Center for 17 years. They moved to Atlantic in 1999, where he worked for the Lutheran Group Home in Atlantic, Iowa.

At an early age, he and his twin sister, Edna, were baptized in the Central Church of Christ in Griswold by the late Rev. Charles Cooper. Through the years, he served in different offices of the church he attended. He also taught Sunday school for many years and was second organist at the First Baptist Church in Atlantic, where at the time of his death, he was a member.

Preceding him in death was his wife, Meta; his parents, Elmer and Fannie Hemphill; three brothers, Mont, Leo, and Melvin; his sisters, Beulah and Edna, and one sister in infancy.

Those surviving Edgar are his four children, Larry (Marletta) Hemphill and their children, Jessica, Erica and Daniel; Garry (Mary) Hemphill and their children, Amanda and Alyssa; Marlene (Mark) Hansen and their children, Brittany and Chris; James (Lisa) Hemphill and their children, Emily, Logan, Olivia and Carter. Also surviving are six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, April 21, 2017, at Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic, Iowa, with burial in the Griswold Cemetery, Griswold, Iowa.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service and during refreshments in Hockenberry’s Community Room following the committal service in Griswold.
