Edna Cecelia Tessman Koenig, the daughter of Frederick and Mary (Schraeder) Tessman, was born Aug. 12, 1916, at her parents home in Viola Township, Audubon County, Iowa, and died February 17, 2011, at The Friendship Home in Audubon, Iowa at the age of 94 years, 6 months, and 5 days.
Edna was baptized and confirmed at the Ross Evangelical Church. She attended the Viola Township School, graduating with the High School Class of 1934.
On November 17, 1934, she was united in marriage to Walter G. Koenig. Four children: Monica Jean, Jerald Lee, Walter Dean, and Jacquelyn Kay were born to this union.They lived in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for two years and then moved back to Audubon to farm, where they raised corn and cattle on the Koenig farm in Leroy Township.
In 1971 Edna moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and worked at Rockwell International.In 1978 she married Vernon Deist and moved back to Audubon, where she became a member of the First United Methodist Church.
Edna was activeas a Sunday school teacher, church pianist, church womens circle, as well as a 4-H leader and president of the Association of Retarded Children. She enjoyed playing the piano and organ. She became a resident of The Friendship Home on April 13, 2010.
Preceding her death were her husbands Walter Koenig and Vernon Deist, a grandchild Jeffrey Petersen, her parents, her siblings and their spouses: Lydia (Orvie) Williamson, Inez (Ralph) Atherton, William (Zola and Myrtle) Tessman, Clarence (Thelma) Tessman, Archie (Evelyn) Tessman, and an infant brother Ralph Clark Tessman.
Survivors include her children Monica and husband Cliff Petersen and Jerry and wife Linda Koenig all of Audubon, Iowa; Dean Koenig and Jacquelyn Koenig both of Boulder, Utah; her grandchildren Darwin (Julie) Petersen of Ida Grove, Iowa, Scott (Ann) Petersen and Perry (Tammy) Petersen all of Omaha, Nebraska, Randy Koenig of Hamlin, Iowa, Kristi Koenig of Grimes, Iowa, Angie Koenig of Audubon; her great-grandchildren Lindsey (Mike) Henderson of Omaha, Chase Petersen of Omaha, Damien Schloesser and Kylee Koenig both of Audubon, and Makayla Stephens of Grimes, Iowa; her great-great granddaughter Graci Jo Henderson of Omaha; her step-grandchildren John, Tracy, Brad, and Kelly Knueven and Teresa Miller; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Cemetery:
Interment will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Audubon.
Visitation:
The family will meet with friends Friday evening at 6:00 P.M. at the Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon.
Service:
Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Jud Stover on Saturday, February 19, 2011, at 1:30 P.M. at the First United Methodist Church in Audubon, Iowa.
